Pozycja Amazonka, malarka, zakonnica. O Celinie Michałowskiej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Kulesza, MonikaThe paper focuses on the life story of Celina Michałowska, daughter of the famous painter Piotr Michałowski. In 1868 she entered the Convent of Sisters of Immaculate Conception, whose cofounder, Sister Marcelina Darowska, had chosen Jazłowiec in Podolia as its principal seat. Celina, having adopted the name of Maria Celina of the Holy Trinity, spent half a century in Ukraine, serving the convent with her artistic talent. She developed the painting skills in her pupils, taught aetshetics as well as English, worked on translations and developed her own painting talent. In the convent workshop she painted pictures which later adorned other houses of the convent, chapels, churches and Uniate churches in Podolia. The present paper is aimed to shed a new light on the person of Celina Michałowska with the use of her unpublished correspondence with Blessed Marcelina Darowska.Pozycja „Auch wir sind das Volk“1. Zu Einwanderung und Ankommen in essayistischen Texten der jungen postmigrantischen Generation in Deutschland(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Rutka, AnnaThe paper provides an analysis of three essayistic works of the young post-immigrant generation representatives: Lena Gorelik, Jagoda Marinić and Maxi Obexer. The significant affinity of the essayistic texts consists in the intercultural and self-reflexive perspective of the authors who expound issues related to traditional classifications and terms of culture alterity and diversity. The essays put issues of the language, designation and acceptance within the context of the current migration movements in the focus of attention. For the three authors who are established in the interculturality it is of great importance to present and reflect upon the contingency of discourses which are attributed to the essentialism culture concepts, and also to question and update the inherited terminology of the current integration discourse.Pozycja Berlin – soczewka współczesnej Europy. Uwagi na marginesie książki Ewy Wanat „Deutsche nasz. Reportaże berlińskie”(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Sukiennik, MagdalenaBerlin and the city’s inhabitants are the characters of Wanat’s reportage. The book is a collection of talks and evidence record of meetings with particular people. Every Berliner has their own story. While presenting the stories, the author spotlights the complexity of the city. The capital city, like any other metropolis, is a medley of various cultures and behaviours. The city reflects the borderline of the features which both unite and divide the society and endanger their peaceful coexistence. The border areas are particularly exposed to conflicts. For onlookers, Berlin seems to be a coherent mosaic. However, it is drastically divided. This incoherence is shown in varied characters of the districts, it is reflected in language, too. Resentments, stereotypes and generalisations add to this discrepancy. A peaceful coexistence in such a cosmopolitan hybrid city requires building an agora and bridges. They create the background to begin a dialogue. Liberal democracy helps to introduce socio-cultural structures, as well as mental patterns of perception. This prevents antagonisms in society. A lesson of tolerance averts hostility and others are not treated as if they were strangers. Learning an appropriate attitude towards the dissimilar takes a long time, and the challenge must be repeatedly undertaken if society is to remain united. Analysing such a big city as Berlin, Ewa Wanat illustrates complex problems of contemporary Europe.Pozycja Brex and the city. Cultural references in British, Polish and German Newspaper Articles on the British EU Referendum(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Miller, DorotaSocially produced ideas can be tracked in individual texts or groups of texts, especially media texts commonly regarded as “[…] moments when the larger social and political structures within the culture are exposed to analysis” (Turner 1996: 88). This inextricable connection between media and culture in modern societies is reflected in the interdisciplinary field of research known as the study of media culture (cf. Kellner 1995), Medienkulturwissenschaft (cf. Schmidt 2003) or kulturoznawcze medioznawstwo (Gwóźdź 2008). Following this, the focus of attention of this study are examples of intra- and cross-cultural intertextuality in British, German and Polish Brexit-related newspaper articles.Pozycja Czas Anny Frajlich(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Tański, PawełAnna Frajlich has finally received a decent collection of critical studies concerning her diverse work. Born in 1942, a poet and prose writer, who has been living in the United States for years, should have received such a recognition a long time ago, as she is an intriguing artist and an important personality in the cultural life of Polish refugees. It was fortunate, therefore, that in 2018 th volume „Here I am / inhabit my own life”. Studies and sketches about the work of Anna Frajlich, edited by Wojciech Ligęza and Jolanta Pasterska was published in Kraków . The studies and sketches on the artistry of the author of Indian Summer were collected on 433 pages, the volume contains 31 papers, the collection is well composed. We have received a volume of excellent value that reads well, satisfying the hunger of intellectual curiosity and emotional greed for the voice of the American emigrant’s interpreters. That very important work perfectly fits in the literature on the subject of emigre literature, or in general – on the subject of Polish literature of the twentieth century and after 2000, bringing much needed studies on the writings of Anna Frajlich who is here and lives in our memory.Pozycja Cztery cząstki wyobraźni poetyckiej Juliana Przybosia: Podgórze i gotyckie katedry, Holokaust i Atlantyk(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Obremski, KrzysztofThe paper consists of two parts. The first one is dedicated to Przyboś as a son of Podgórze and to his relations with gothic cathedrals. The second one is dedicated the connection between the Atlantic and the Holocaust, and it is constituted around the idea of double vastness: the enormity of ocean waters and the martyrdom of the Jews; the poetic importance, however, lying not only in the very comparison, but in the possibility of proving its legitimacy.Pozycja Czy są nam potrzebni „marni” poeci?(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Czajkowska, AgnieszkaThe paper contains reflections on the historical circumstances of the evaluation of artistic work, which guarantee immortality to one author, and condemn others to oblivion. The author takes into account the popularity of poetry which is not of the highest quality, and which is present in mass culture. Poems by less known, mediocre poets appear as lyrics of national or religious songs . Examples of the 19th and 20th century literature have been provided, including works of Michał Bałucki, Jan Czeczot, Maria Konopnicka, Franciszek Karpiński, Teofil Lenartowicz, Władysław Syrokomla, Stefan Witwicki and others. The study emphasizes the unconsciousness of readers and users as to the authorship, circumstances of the creation, as well as the original purpose of the texts that are read and sung to this day. As a result of the analysis, it turns out that popular culture can store valuable content and is an important reservoir of national culture.Pozycja Doświadczając historii: melancholia przeszłości w kulturach peryferyjnych na przykładzie Polski i Portugalii(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Partyka, JoannaIn this paper I combine several different notions from broadly conceived humanities and two histories: of Poland and of Portugal at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. I comprehend here the experiencing of history as a way of treating one’s own, national past. The metaphor of experiencing history is related to the question of what the historical circumstances and situations are, what the purpose is and what history is referred to by the elites who are instrumental in shaping national identity. Melancholy of the past is already a partial answer-thesis to the question: In what way? The notion of peripheral cultures seems to be useful when we attempt to answer the question: in what situations and for what purpose we (the Portuguese and the Poles) referred, but also still continue to refer, to the past/history. Some considerations on the experience of history will have the following two Unions in the background: the Iberian Union (1580) and the Union of Lublin (1569).Pozycja Dwie małe formy literackie Floriana Czarnyszewicza jako świadectwa idei polskości w jego twórczości(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Janiszewski, AleksanderThe paper deals with two stories by Florian Czarnyszewicz, written on the subject of Argentinian Polish Community (Polonia) to which he devoted his entire social activity. Biblical were invented in the small literary forms of the writer. A short comparison have been made with the works of other writers, in particular with Mikhail Szolochowy.Pozycja Europa ohne Nationen. Robert Menasses Beitrag zur Gestaltung der Europäischen Union der Zukunft in „Die Hauptstadt“(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Jaśkiewicz, GrzegorzDiscussions on the condition of Europe and on the European idea among intellectuals, especially German-speaking writers, have a long and rich history. Goethe and Schiller already spoke about in the 18th century and Novalis in the 19th century, the latter pointing to the European cultural community. After the experiences of the First and Second World Wars, of the cruelty and barbarity of warfare, of dehumanization and mass murder, the discussions on the essence of Europe revived. Richard Nikolaus Coudenhove-Kalergi and Heinrich Mann suggested the creation of a European Community which, although far from today’s European Union, in theory was supposed to serve as a protection against the repetition of nationalism and wars. In 1992 the European Union was founded on the groundwork of the EEC. Austrian-born Robert Menasse is another German-language writer who actively defends the European Union by proclaiming radical views, namely the departure from the nations and the creation of the Republic of Europe. His 2017 novel Die Hauptstadt (The Capital), awarded the Deutscher Buchpreis (German Book Prize) literary prize, is a tribute to Europe and an important contribution to the discussion on the European community and its future. Through the mouth of his alter ego in the novel, Prof. Alois Erhart, Menasse calls for the rejection of the attachment to nations and the creation of Europe of Regions. The book is basically the first European novel (about the European Union) by a German-writing author with such a progressive message. In the novel, the author, shows, against the background of the life of EU officials in Brussels, the reality of Europe, the understanding of national and European identity and the burden of the Holocaust and the bestiality of nationalism for contemporary Europeans. The present paper discusses these views and inscribes them in the long lasting debate on Europe, indicating at the same time the progressiveness of the European idea.Pozycja „Godne Księstwo Litewskie takiego klejnotu” – edycja krytyczna cyklu wierszy dotyczących Pogoni z „Pocztu herbów” Wacława Potockiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Piotrowiak, DariuszThe paper is a critical edition of Wacław Potocki’s series of poems centered around the Lithuanian coat of arms „Pogonia”. The poems come from a verse book of heraldry: The Coats of Arms of the Nobility of the Polish Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, published in 1696. The transcription of the works is accompanied by explanations of a multifaceted character.Pozycja History as Trauma: Death, Violence, and Loss in the Poetry of Taras Mel’nychuk(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Borysiuk, IrynaThe paper examines the liaison of key motifs and ways represented in the poetry of Taras Melnychuk through the concepts of trauma and violence. Body, home, and language are the main constituent elements of the indigenous space, and their dramatic destruction is a crucial motif in Melnychuk’s poetry. On the one hand, the poet appeals to the holistic, consistent, formulaic language of folklore and mythology as to a mirror of an idyllic and non-fragmented world. On the other hand, dismemberment and fragmentation conceptualized as an act of violence committed against holistic language become the only way of describing the perverse and violent world in circumstances with no language for its expression at all.Pozycja „Hymenaeus abo wiersz godowy” Pawła Mankiewicza na tle innych siedemnastowiecznych epitalamiów mieszczańskich(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Nowakowski, Michał“Hymenaeus, or a Mating Poem” by Paweł Mankiewicz, found in the second half of the 20th century, is an epithalamion written for the wedding of Barbara Kleinpoldtówna and Jakub Giza in 1642. The author, the newlyweds as well as the commissioners of the piece are all representatives of the bourgeoisie. In many respects, however, Mankiewicz’s poem definitely stands out among other 17th-century bourgeois wedding poems, not imitating epithalamions characteristic of „high” literature, yet introducing valuable historical, moral and epic information.Pozycja Idea unii polsko-litewskiej w twórczości Jana Kochanowskiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Rusnak, RadosławThe paper takes a common view of those works by Jan Kochanowski which reflect the relationship between the author and the act of the Polish-Lithuanian Union established on 1 July 1569 in Lublin. The only text that is the poet’s direct reaction to the event in question is Proporzec or Hołd pruski, which does not mean that there are no other works of this type by Kochanowski. The examples are the poem Zgoda / Concordia, Fragment XXI (Battle with Amurat at Varna), the Latin Ode IV (Ad Concordiam) or Fraszka II 107 (Na most warszewski / On the Bridge of Warsaw).Pozycja In varietate concordia. Nauki humanistyczne i ich wpływ na imaginarium społeczne(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Żardecka, MagdalenaThe paper views human sciences as a kind of cultural bond, building unity across all divisions and boundaries. For this purpose it uses arguments proposed by such intellectuals as Nussbaum, Rorty, Markowski and Assmann. It aims at justification of the thesis that humanities serve intrinsic integration and development of personality, social integration, maintaining bonds with the past and history, and creating a sense of common destiny of all human beings. Human sciences expand our horizons, allowing us to transcend the limits of our inborn egoism, they teach us how to imaginatively reach beyond and above the local perspective, creating foundations for interpersonal solidarity, respect, tolerance and compassion. The present political trends in Poland and in the world clearly favor natural and technical sciences, tending to devaluate and to marginalize humanities, which can be a prognostic of cultural regress, with unpredictable consequences for the future.Pozycja Interpretacja politycznej agresji w dramacie Mariusa Ivaškevičiusa „Mistrz” („Mistras”, 2010)(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Čiočytė, DaliaMarius Ivaškevičius’ drama “The Mistr” (2010) is a tragi-comical grotesque pasted together from historical and cultural symbols and interpreting the person of Adomas Mickevičius (1798–1855) and his relationships with Andrzej Towiański (1799–1878), the prototype for the Mistr in the play. In religious and cultural history Andrzej Towiański, a self-proclaimed prophet, „a mistr called by God“, represents the archetypical figure of the false prophet. M. Ivaškevičius’ play constructs the demonic figure of the Mistr as the sign of the demonic nature of political oppression. The entanglement of political aggression and the demonic is typically found in Lithuanian literature. The work offers an original variation on the entanglement by reflecting the Soviet propaganda, its fantastic ability to penetrate into the deepest levels of a victim’s mentality.Pozycja Jana Ponętowskiego wierszowana relacja o unii lubelskiej i sejmie 1569 roku(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Kroczak, JerzyThe union between Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a legal act with permanent and historically important effects, was signed in Lublin in 1569. Jan Ponętowski (a nobleman, probably a witness of the events) wrote a poetic report on the event entitled “Krótki rzeczy polskich sejmowych pamięci godnych komentarz (Short Commentary on Memorable Polish Parliamentary Matters)”, printed in Cracow in 1569. The paper touches upon what Ponętowski says about the Union and other events in Lublin during the parliament: diplomatic missions, judgments, topics of talks and news from other lands. It also tries to explain why the Union of Lublin (the most important achievement of the parliament) was only marginally described by the author; and also why he only laconically reported the solemn feudal homage of Albert Frederick, the Duke of Prussia, to the Polish king Sigismund II Augustus. The paper compares Ponętowski’s book with old-Polish historiographical descriptions of these matters.Pozycja Konstanty Gaszyński na Litwie(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Lyszczyna, JacekKonstanty Gaszyński found himself in Lithuania during the November Uprising, fighting as a lieutenant in the corps of General Giełgud. The images of the uprising in Lithuania are reflected in his book “Pieśni pielgrzyma polskiego” (“The Songs of a Polish Pilgrim”). It was published in Paris in 1833, after the defeat of the uprising, and it contains 24 poems, e.g.: “Przejście Niemna przez wojska polskie (Crossing the Neman by the Polish Army), Spalenie Czerwonego dworu (The Burning of the Red Mansion), Zajęcie Rosień przez powstańców (Insurgents Occupying Rosienie)” and “Do Emilii Plater i Marii Raszanowicz, walczących w szeregach powstańców litewskich (To Emilia Plater and Maria Raszanowicz, Fighting in the Ranks of the Insurgents of Lithuania)”.Pozycja Konterfekt polsko-litewskich zbliżeń w poezji Wacława Potockiego („Ogród nie plewiony”, „Moralia”)(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Borkowski, AndrzejThe paper deals with less well-known poetry of Wacław Potocki, which concerns Polish and Lithuanian relations. The poems show the multicoloured picture of social and political tensions between the Lithuanians and the Poles. A satiric tone and the moral high ground prevail in Potocki’s poems. Stable relations between Poland and Lithuania are perceived by the writer as the key factor for safety and development of the common country. The writings sometimes present a critical attitude of the poet towards the separatist tendency of Lithuania, and they also reveal the poet’s pride in belonging to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.Pozycja Krzysztof Czyżewski a paryska „Kultura”(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Wal, AnnaThe paper focuses on the various forms of collaboration of Krzysztof Czyżewski, the founder of the Borderland Foundation in Sejny, organiser of cultural events, poet and essayist, with Parisian Kultura. It discusses Czyżewski’s essays, published in the magazine between 1997-2000 which concerned the problems of Central and Eastern Europe and the issues connected with the borderland. The paper points to the idea, emphasized by Czyżewski, of multicultural dialogue and building open societies in the multicultural regions of Central and Eastern Europe after 1989 based on historical memory while at the same time overcoming the existing conflicts. It mentions the prizes awarded to Czyżewski by Jerzy Giedroyc and the fact that he is considered the continuator of the program of Kultura, promoting the strengthening of the bonds between Poland and its closest neighbours.
