Pogranicze i prowincja kontra prowincjonalizm. Lekcja Krzysztofa Czyżewskiego
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Korwin-Piotrowska, Dorota
The paper concerns a book by Krzysztof Czyżewski entitled “A Small Center of the World” and the issues presented in it, namely those of borderland and province, of the merging of various cultures, nationalities, traditions, and religious beliefs within one space. Czyżewski is the initiator, founder, and for almost three decades an employee of the Borderland Foundation and Center in Sejny, as well as of the nearby International Center for Dialogue in Krasnogruda (both localities are situated close to the Polish-Lithuanian border). As a “practitioner of ideas”, as he tends to call himself, Czyżewski casts a new light on the issue of province by pointing out that thanks to caring for one’s own roots and for the local, it may become possible to prevent the provincialism of thinking, and that the possibilities of overcoming inter-human division accumulate in the „small centers of the world”. The paper does not only discuss the issues which are focused on in the book in question, but also refers to other works dedicated to borderlands and to the current cultural situation in Poland.

    Czas Anny Frajlich
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Tański, Paweł
Anna Frajlich has finally received a decent collection of critical studies concerning her diverse work. Born in 1942, a poet and prose writer, who has been living in the United States for years, should have received such a recognition a long time ago, as she is an intriguing artist and an important personality in the cultural life of Polish refugees. It was fortunate, therefore, that in 2018 th volume „Here I am / inhabit my own life”. Studies and sketches about the work of Anna Frajlich, edited by Wojciech Ligęza and Jolanta Pasterska was published in Kraków . The studies and sketches on the artistry of the author of Indian Summer were collected on 433 pages, the volume contains 31 papers, the collection is well composed. We have received a volume of excellent value that reads well, satisfying the hunger of intellectual curiosity and emotional greed for the voice of the American emigrant’s interpreters. That very important work perfectly fits in the literature on the subject of emigre literature, or in general – on the subject of Polish literature of the twentieth century and after 2000, bringing much needed studies on the writings of Anna Frajlich who is here and lives in our memory.

Złudzenia mężczyzn, złudzenia kobiet – o iluzoryczności płci
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Sak, Wojciech
The review of “Delusions of Gender: The Real Science Behind Sex Differences” by Cordelia Fine presents the author’s attempt to interpret the intricacies of the scientific literature related to the relationship between the mutual influence of culture and biology (especially neurobiology) on the creation of gender differences. Cordelia Fine pays attention to the lack of conclusive research on differences between the sexes and reveals probable causes of still strong gender stereotyping such as socio-cultural beliefs, neurosexism and unfavorable conditions for gender equal education.

    Wojna (nie)opisana
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Szczepaniak, Monika
The paper is a review of the book “Rozrachunki z wojną” by Sławomir Buryła (Warszawa, Instytut Badań Literackich PAN 2017), which is devoted to the problems of literary representation of war in specific sociocultural contexts. Buryła reflects on Polish literature and pays special attention to the question: what does literature know about war and why? In addition, he diagnoses zones of silence and neglect as serious deficits within Polish war studies, particularly in the field of literary studies. The review contains a reconstruction and analysis of the argumentation provided in “Rozrachunki z wojną” as a contribution to such difficult and embarrassing topics as war, violence, genocide and “time of contempt”.

Szekspir nasz powszedni albo praktyka sensownego czytania w szkole (dziś, tj. „w czasach zarazy cyfrowej” oraz relacji globalnych, a także niezależnie od jakichkolwiek plag czy kataklizmów)
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Kłakówna, Zofia Agnieszka
The paper is based on the assumption that the contemporary educational system, including its general approach to literature, is characterized by being totally old-fashioned, and its results are completely opposite to what the authors of the relevant programmes hoped to achieve, and this is the reason why it desperately needs re-evaluating and revising. The text documents various motivations of interpreting William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, The Tempest, as an example of a valuable and meaningful work of fiction. Thus ‘t is a good starting point for a constructive reflection on how to create conditions suitable for studying literature-based texts in the classroom as well as on teachers’ training which would respect both the up-to-date cultural context and the value of humanistic education, paramount for the development of human identity, and which is nowadays widely contested by the present interim economic and technical priorities.

Zdzisław Beksiński i ponowoczesna melancholia. Zarys interpretacyjny („Na końcu ogrodu”, „Centrala snów”, „Informator”)
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Szczyrek, Paweł
The artistic output of Zdzisław Beksiński finds recognition all over the world. Not so long ago, his visual heritage was enriched by new, literary accomplishments – the collection of short stories written by the artist between 1963 and 1965. The present paper is an analysis of three most expressive pieces in terms of studied esthetics: “Na końcu ogrodu”, “Centrala snow” oraz “Informator”. Beksiński’s short stories are here placed in the context of postmodern melancholy characterized by affirmation of experienced emptiness the source of which was sought for in Beksinski’s generational experiences. On these grounds, a thesis is proposed where the holistic creative concept which merges visual and literary accomplishments is expressed by three figures: decay, repetition and ontological uncertainty. Not only is the object of the analysisa theoretical aspect of a worldview present in the literary works but it also functions as a specific fictional-structural solution.

„Sienkiewiczologowanie”. O Sienkiewiczowskich odniesieniach w powieściach Marii Pruszkowskiej
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Rusin, Joanna
References to the work of H. Sienkiewicz in the work of M. Pruszkowska (1910–1973) appear in two of her novels: “Prześlę panu list i klucz” (“I Will Send You a Letter and a Key”) (1959) and “Życie nie jest romansem, ale…” (“Life Is not a Love Affair, but…”) (1964). The former depicts the fate of a book-loving Warsaw family in the 1930s. The parents and two daughters constantly use quotations in their conversations, which come from their favourite novels, most often from the Trilogy. The sisters make their lives theatrical by impersonating literary characters and competing in the best possible knowledge of Sienkiewicz’s texts. The other novel shows the same family during the Second World War. In the conditions of occupation, references to the favourite fragments of the Nobel Prize winner’s works often gain new and surprising significance. The literary excitement of Pruszkowska’s characters is analogous to the experiences of successive generations of Polish readers.

Cztery cząstki wyobraźni poetyckiej Juliana Przybosia: Podgórze i gotyckie katedry, Holokaust i Atlantyk
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Obremski, Krzysztof
The paper consists of two parts. The first one is dedicated to Przyboś as a son of Podgórze and to his relations with gothic cathedrals. The second one is dedicated the connection between the Atlantic and the Holocaust, and it is constituted around the idea of double vastness: the enormity of ocean waters and the martyrdom of the Jews; the poetic importance, however, lying not only in the very comparison, but in the possibility of proving its legitimacy.

Popularyzacja czytelnictwa oraz historii ojczystej w twórczości literackiej krakowskiej bajarki i animatorki kultury Marii Niklewiczowej

Maria Niklewiczowa, an author of children’s literature, , contributed to the popularization of reading practice through telling her fairy tales during public shows and having her stories published later on, based on the idea that listening to fairy tales belongs to children’s first contacts with literature. As an author of novels, she promotedg the knowledge of history. She was an organizer of cultural activities as well, as evidenced in her fairy tale reading sessions. Until today, her most popular book is a volume of fairy-tales titled „Bajarka opowiada” (first edition – 1959).

    Opowieść o „życiopisaniu”. Portret Emily Dickinson w filmie „Cicha namiętność” Terence’a Daviesa
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Bobowski, Sławomir
Emily Dickinson was not married nor had children, she did not establish a family, but she had a life filled to the brim with love, friendship, suffering, death, searching for God and, of course, writing poems about all these fundamental phenomena of human existence. Her poetry reveals a picture of a woman who is unusually spiritually rich, beautiful and…unhappy, living for the bigger part of her mature existence like a hermit, oftentimes being a witness of deaths of those to whom she was closest. Additionally, perhaps because of her Sapphic inclination, she could experience suffering being forced to suppress it and feeling social isolation or exclusion. On the other hand, any reader of poems by “the nun of Amherst” can sense a great blast of happiness and some ecstatic delight over the existence itself and… the possibility of expressing this delight in poems. Just life itself and poetry were the greatest passions of Dickinson among many others which profusely filled her psyche. Indeed, it is difficult to assess which of these two infatuations was stronger. That is why I used in the title of my essay a neologism: “life-writing” (“życiopisanie”), which was some time ago first employed by the Polish poet Edward Stachura in reference to his own life and poetry. Terence Davies’s movie about Emily Dickinson and her life is a real masterpiece in which the weave of the two main passions Dickinson had, their interpenetration, their ardent intimacy or simply indissolubility and unity have been shown in a deliciously suggestive way. The essay is a modest attempt at using such a way of describing things.

„Tmou za láskou”. Renarracja „Quo vadis” w słowackim musicalu
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Szargot, Barbara
The paper is a description of the Slovak musical based on Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel “Quo Vadis”. The analysis has been made on the basis of the categories of intertextual research proposed by George Genette. Transferring Sienkiewicz’s story into the world of pop culture in case of this musical is done by changing its main subject: now it is love in all its meanings. Looking at this, we can see which elements of the author’s creation seem appealing for the contemporary culture: the word (the widely quoted hipotext), the plot in a broad outline and the emotion it carries.

Treści religijne w wierszach dla dzieci Stanisława Jachowicza
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Szargot, Maciej
Stanisław Jachowicz’s poetry for children is filled with religious themes and language, sometimes used unthinkingly but usually consciously. The “tales”, “novels” and “parables” he created contain the elements of traditional genres used in catechesis: the catechism, the sermon and the biblical parable. The subject matter of the poet’s fables is more complicated because of animals and objects that believe in God, pray and even achieve salvation, which frequently takes place while Jachowicz makes a huge effort for his didactic works not to become close to heresy.

Literackie odwołania w pismach filozoficznych Karola Libelta jako przykład dziewiętnastowiecznego myślenia komparatystycznego
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Ujma, Martyna
The topic of the paper is the occurrence of literary references (quotations, allusions, paraphrases) in philosophical works of the 19th century philosopher Karol Libelt. The study examines theoretical considerations (included by the scholar in his dissertations) on the connections between philosophy and literature. It also describes the scholar’s attitude towards Polish Romantic poetry. Literary references to the works of poets such as Krasicki, Karpiński, Krasiński, Pol, Zaleski, or Mickiewicz are subject to analysis and interpretation. These have been acknowledged as one of the crucial elements of Slavic philosophy, and as an indicator of the Romantic model within the philosophy of history. The references to literary works have also been recognized as a sign of the philosopher’s comparatist line of thought, resembling in its structure that of Goethe’s.

Amazonka, malarka, zakonnica. O Celinie Michałowskiej
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Kulesza, Monika
The paper focuses on the life story of Celina Michałowska, daughter of the famous painter Piotr Michałowski. In 1868 she entered the Convent of Sisters of Immaculate Conception, whose cofounder, Sister Marcelina Darowska, had chosen Jazłowiec in Podolia as its principal seat. Celina, having adopted the name of Maria Celina of the Holy Trinity, spent half a century in Ukraine, serving the convent with her artistic talent. She developed the painting skills in her pupils, taught aetshetics as well as English, worked on translations and developed her own painting talent. In the convent workshop she painted pictures which later adorned other houses of the convent, chapels, churches and Uniate churches in Podolia. The present paper is aimed to shed a new light on the person of Celina Michałowska with the use of her unpublished correspondence with Blessed Marcelina Darowska.

Czy są nam potrzebni „marni” poeci?
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Czajkowska, Agnieszka
The paper contains reflections on the historical circumstances of the evaluation of artistic work, which guarantee immortality to one author, and condemn others to oblivion. The author takes into account the popularity of poetry which is not of the highest quality, and which is present in mass culture. Poems by less known, mediocre poets appear as lyrics of national or religious songs . Examples of the 19th and 20th century literature have been provided, including works of Michał Bałucki, Jan Czeczot, Maria Konopnicka, Franciszek Karpiński, Teofil Lenartowicz, Władysław Syrokomla, Stefan Witwicki and others. The study emphasizes the unconsciousness of readers and users as to the authorship, circumstances of the creation, as well as the original purpose of the texts that are read and sung to this day. As a result of the analysis, it turns out that popular culture can store valuable content and is an important reservoir of national culture.

W poszukiwaniu miejsc trzecich w podróżopisarstwie XIX wieku na przykładzie „Tour through England” Izabeli z Flemingów Czartoryskiej
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Popławski, Marcin
The paper aims at presenting the concept of a third place and indicating how it can be applied to critical reading of travelogues. The concept of third places, presented in the ’70s by Ray Oldenburg, corresponds to a research movement searching correlation between literature and space according to the principles of the spatial turn. The application of the concept of third places seems to be of special interest during the reading of travel journals. Reactions and behavior of protagonists in third places lead to a new perspective on the person-place relation and settles a traveller in the role of a newcomer as opposed to a regular. An example of a travelogue for analysis is Tour through England by Izabela Czartoryska neé Fleming.

„Hymenaeus abo wiersz godowy” Pawła Mankiewicza na tle innych siedemnastowiecznych epitalamiów mieszczańskich
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Nowakowski, Michał
“Hymenaeus, or a Mating Poem” by Paweł Mankiewicz, found in the second half of the 20th century, is an epithalamion written for the wedding of Barbara Kleinpoldtówna and Jakub Giza in 1642. The author, the newlyweds as well as the commissioners of the piece are all representatives of the bourgeoisie. In many respects, however, Mankiewicz’s poem definitely stands out among other 17th-century bourgeois wedding poems, not imitating epithalamions characteristic of „high” literature, yet introducing valuable historical, moral and epic information.

Brex and the city. Cultural references in British, Polish and German Newspaper Articles on the British EU Referendum
(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Miller, Dorota
Socially produced ideas can be tracked in individual texts or groups of texts, especially media texts commonly regarded as “[…] moments when the larger social and political structures within the culture are exposed to analysis” (Turner 1996: 88). This inextricable connection between media and culture in modern societies is reflected in the interdisciplinary field of research known as the study of media culture (cf. Kellner 1995), Medienkulturwissenschaft (cf. Schmidt 2003) or kulturoznawcze medioznawstwo (Gwóźdź 2008). Following this, the focus of attention of this study are examples of intra- and cross-cultural intertextuality in British, German and Polish Brexit-related newspaper articles.
