Pozycja Dwie małe formy literackie Floriana Czarnyszewicza jako świadectwa idei polskości w jego twórczości(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Janiszewski, AleksanderThe paper deals with two stories by Florian Czarnyszewicz, written on the subject of Argentinian Polish Community (Polonia) to which he devoted his entire social activity. Biblical were invented in the small literary forms of the writer. A short comparison have been made with the works of other writers, in particular with Mikhail Szolochowy.Pozycja Mikołaj Rej a „sprawa litewska” – uwagi Pana z Nagłowic o unii (lubelskiej) i Litwinach(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Dybek, DariuszMikolaj Rej was not only one of the most notable 16th century Polish writers, but also an active member of the parliament. Among others, he worked on the Polish-Lithuanian issues. Based on the governmental documentation, Rej was engaged in these issues from 1542 onwards. He also dedicated a few pieces of writing to the matter, the most important of which is a poem written around 1567 entitled ‘Union with Lithuania’. In the poem he condemned the sluggishness in debating the unification of the two countries, but emphasized that the Lithuanians should have taken a greater interest in the matter, since Poland could have helped their fights with the Eastern neighbours. As he did during the parliamentary sessions, the author also stressed the need for electing a common king. Despite hoping for a quick resolution and unification, Rej did not regard Lithuania as an equal parter for Poland. Based on a few poets, the author seems to think of the Lithuanians as of a backward nation (e.g. their table manners during the feasts and the use of primitive language). It is worth noting that Rej treated the Lithuanian aristocracy differently. While describing the clans and noble families (e.g. the Radziwiłł family or the Chodkiewicz family), he emphasised their patriotism and bravery. Rej’s remarks on the Lithuanians and the union did not stand out from the common opinion at the time. They could represent the feelings of a typical member of the Polish gentry.Pozycja Wyciszana klęska unii lubelskiej: litewska odsiecz wiedeńska(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Obremski, KrzysztofDid the Union of Lublin pass the test of time in 1683 in perhaps in the most difficult period for it? The Lithuanian relief of Vienna was only simulated, but if everything was calmed down, it was because the anti-Royal opposition was strong and John III was weak. At the same time, a problem arose of how to proclaim the glory of the Viennese triumph without humiliating the late and infamous Lithuania? The answer is a school Jesuit theatre and a performance entitled Picture of Victory [...].Pozycja Pogranicze i prowincja kontra prowincjonalizm. Lekcja Krzysztofa Czyżewskiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Korwin-Piotrowska, DorotaThe paper concerns a book by Krzysztof Czyżewski entitled “A Small Center of the World” and the issues presented in it, namely those of borderland and province, of the merging of various cultures, nationalities, traditions, and religious beliefs within one space. Czyżewski is the initiator, founder, and for almost three decades an employee of the Borderland Foundation and Center in Sejny, as well as of the nearby International Center for Dialogue in Krasnogruda (both localities are situated close to the Polish-Lithuanian border). As a “practitioner of ideas”, as he tends to call himself, Czyżewski casts a new light on the issue of province by pointing out that thanks to caring for one’s own roots and for the local, it may become possible to prevent the provincialism of thinking, and that the possibilities of overcoming inter-human division accumulate in the „small centers of the world”. The paper does not only discuss the issues which are focused on in the book in question, but also refers to other works dedicated to borderlands and to the current cultural situation in Poland.Pozycja Profesor Florian Śmieja – pożegnanie(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Pasterska, JolantaPozycja Czas Anny Frajlich(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Tański, PawełAnna Frajlich has finally received a decent collection of critical studies concerning her diverse work. Born in 1942, a poet and prose writer, who has been living in the United States for years, should have received such a recognition a long time ago, as she is an intriguing artist and an important personality in the cultural life of Polish refugees. It was fortunate, therefore, that in 2018 th volume „Here I am / inhabit my own life”. Studies and sketches about the work of Anna Frajlich, edited by Wojciech Ligęza and Jolanta Pasterska was published in Kraków . The studies and sketches on the artistry of the author of Indian Summer were collected on 433 pages, the volume contains 31 papers, the collection is well composed. We have received a volume of excellent value that reads well, satisfying the hunger of intellectual curiosity and emotional greed for the voice of the American emigrant’s interpreters. That very important work perfectly fits in the literature on the subject of emigre literature, or in general – on the subject of Polish literature of the twentieth century and after 2000, bringing much needed studies on the writings of Anna Frajlich who is here and lives in our memory.Pozycja Popularyzacja czytelnictwa oraz historii ojczystej w twórczości literackiej krakowskiej bajarki i animatorki kultury Marii Niklewiczowej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Uljasz, AdrianMaria Niklewiczowa, an author of children’s literature, , contributed to the popularization of reading practice through telling her fairy tales during public shows and having her stories published later on, based on the idea that listening to fairy tales belongs to children’s first contacts with literature. As an author of novels, she promotedg the knowledge of history. She was an organizer of cultural activities as well, as evidenced in her fairy tale reading sessions. Until today, her most popular book is a volume of fairy-tales titled „Bajarka opowiada” (first edition – 1959).Pozycja Literature in the Context of Unification Initiatives to Commemorate the 450th Anniversary of the Union of Lublin(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Stanisz, Marek; Trościński, GrzegorzThe paper is an introduction to the discussion devoted to literary evidence of “unification initiatives” (unions, alliances, international agreements and other unification projects) as witnessed in the history of Europe over many centuries. Artistic writings have long presented the dialogue between union partners, taking place both in public (international or national) as well as private space. Among these phenomena, particularly noteworthy are unification visions, cultural osmosis, evidence of individual participation in unification processes, acts of building the collective awareness, ways of interpreting both shared and alien cultural or religious symbols, literary expressions of the relations between “I” and “You”, strategies used in constructing the linguistic image of the shared world and alien worlds. The paper attempts to systematize specific issues related to these problems and is an introduction to the discussion carried out in the latest issue of „Tematy i Konteksty”.Pozycja Modele polskiej prozy „unijnej”. Próba klasyfikacji(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Pasterska, JolantaPoland’s accession to the European Union and the democratization of the country resulted in a change in the specificity of the Polish emigration prose. Its political dimension was subdued. The status and role of the writer-emigrant changed. Now, without the feeling of having betrayed his/her homeland or language, the writer has become a chronicler of the life of compatriots abroad and an observer of the culture of the country of settlement. The focus of the present considerations is an attempt to characterize three models according to which the description of sociological and cultural phenomena takes place. The first one covers the type of stories symptomatic of migration in which the characters are young people without complexes, curious about the world, wishing to discover it. In this case, we are dealing with intercultural texts that attempt to describe the new culture of the country of settlement and the related identity experiences. The second model uses a model present in postcolonial literature. The hero of this prose is an oppressed migrant whose “mission” is, in a sense, to conquer the new country in order to become a “colonizer” and lose the status of a “colonized” one. He/she thus stands in opposition to a foreign world and the new culture/cultures. The third variant collects polemic works in the face of both this doctrine and the post-colonial discourse, both of which, entering into dialogue with the above mentioned forms, create their own model of counter-discourse.Pozycja Szekspir nasz powszedni albo praktyka sensownego czytania w szkole (dziś, tj. „w czasach zarazy cyfrowej” oraz relacji globalnych, a także niezależnie od jakichkolwiek plag czy kataklizmów)(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Kłakówna, Zofia AgnieszkaThe paper is based on the assumption that the contemporary educational system, including its general approach to literature, is characterized by being totally old-fashioned, and its results are completely opposite to what the authors of the relevant programmes hoped to achieve, and this is the reason why it desperately needs re-evaluating and revising. The text documents various motivations of interpreting William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, The Tempest, as an example of a valuable and meaningful work of fiction. Thus ‘t is a good starting point for a constructive reflection on how to create conditions suitable for studying literature-based texts in the classroom as well as on teachers’ training which would respect both the up-to-date cultural context and the value of humanistic education, paramount for the development of human identity, and which is nowadays widely contested by the present interim economic and technical priorities.Pozycja Jana Ponętowskiego wierszowana relacja o unii lubelskiej i sejmie 1569 roku(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Kroczak, JerzyThe union between Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a legal act with permanent and historically important effects, was signed in Lublin in 1569. Jan Ponętowski (a nobleman, probably a witness of the events) wrote a poetic report on the event entitled “Krótki rzeczy polskich sejmowych pamięci godnych komentarz (Short Commentary on Memorable Polish Parliamentary Matters)”, printed in Cracow in 1569. The paper touches upon what Ponętowski says about the Union and other events in Lublin during the parliament: diplomatic missions, judgments, topics of talks and news from other lands. It also tries to explain why the Union of Lublin (the most important achievement of the parliament) was only marginally described by the author; and also why he only laconically reported the solemn feudal homage of Albert Frederick, the Duke of Prussia, to the Polish king Sigismund II Augustus. The paper compares Ponętowski’s book with old-Polish historiographical descriptions of these matters.Pozycja „Niezadowoleni są, ale nie uciekać było spod Pskowa, a dotrwać do końca!” Jan Piotrowski o Litwinach(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Ślęczka, TomaszThe paper deals with the manner in which the Pole Jan Piotrowski, the author of the diary of Stefan Batory’s expedition to Pskov (1581-1582), depicted the Lithuanians participating in it. He rarely referred to stereotypical ideas about them, rather than this he described the reality that he observed and did not skew it towards the established beliefs. Although he valued his countrymen more, he could show courage and bravery of the Lithuanian soldiers, especially praising the raid of Krzysztof Radziwiłł’s troop. Somewhat more often, however, he reprimanded the Lithuanians: underestimated their number and combat quality, accused them of withdrawing too quickly from Pskov, emphasized their susceptibility to rumours. Among the citizens of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, he most disliked Chancellor Eustachy Wołłowicz, who hindered Piotrowski from fulfilling his mission and often refused access to the documents he possessed. The image we receive is inhomogeneous. It combines bright and dark sides of fellow Lithuanian citizens, which makes it seem very credible.Pozycja „Sienkiewiczologowanie”. O Sienkiewiczowskich odniesieniach w powieściach Marii Pruszkowskiej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Rusin, JoannaReferences to the work of H. Sienkiewicz in the work of M. Pruszkowska (1910–1973) appear in two of her novels: “Prześlę panu list i klucz” (“I Will Send You a Letter and a Key”) (1959) and “Życie nie jest romansem, ale…” (“Life Is not a Love Affair, but…”) (1964). The former depicts the fate of a book-loving Warsaw family in the 1930s. The parents and two daughters constantly use quotations in their conversations, which come from their favourite novels, most often from the Trilogy. The sisters make their lives theatrical by impersonating literary characters and competing in the best possible knowledge of Sienkiewicz’s texts. The other novel shows the same family during the Second World War. In the conditions of occupation, references to the favourite fragments of the Nobel Prize winner’s works often gain new and surprising significance. The literary excitement of Pruszkowska’s characters is analogous to the experiences of successive generations of Polish readers.Pozycja Brex and the city. Cultural references in British, Polish and German Newspaper Articles on the British EU Referendum(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Miller, DorotaSocially produced ideas can be tracked in individual texts or groups of texts, especially media texts commonly regarded as “[…] moments when the larger social and political structures within the culture are exposed to analysis” (Turner 1996: 88). This inextricable connection between media and culture in modern societies is reflected in the interdisciplinary field of research known as the study of media culture (cf. Kellner 1995), Medienkulturwissenschaft (cf. Schmidt 2003) or kulturoznawcze medioznawstwo (Gwóźdź 2008). Following this, the focus of attention of this study are examples of intra- and cross-cultural intertextuality in British, German and Polish Brexit-related newspaper articles.Pozycja Krzysztof Czyżewski a paryska „Kultura”(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Wal, AnnaThe paper focuses on the various forms of collaboration of Krzysztof Czyżewski, the founder of the Borderland Foundation in Sejny, organiser of cultural events, poet and essayist, with Parisian Kultura. It discusses Czyżewski’s essays, published in the magazine between 1997-2000 which concerned the problems of Central and Eastern Europe and the issues connected with the borderland. The paper points to the idea, emphasized by Czyżewski, of multicultural dialogue and building open societies in the multicultural regions of Central and Eastern Europe after 1989 based on historical memory while at the same time overcoming the existing conflicts. It mentions the prizes awarded to Czyżewski by Jerzy Giedroyc and the fact that he is considered the continuator of the program of Kultura, promoting the strengthening of the bonds between Poland and its closest neighbours.Pozycja „Godne Księstwo Litewskie takiego klejnotu” – edycja krytyczna cyklu wierszy dotyczących Pogoni z „Pocztu herbów” Wacława Potockiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Piotrowiak, DariuszThe paper is a critical edition of Wacław Potocki’s series of poems centered around the Lithuanian coat of arms „Pogonia”. The poems come from a verse book of heraldry: The Coats of Arms of the Nobility of the Polish Crown and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, published in 1696. The transcription of the works is accompanied by explanations of a multifaceted character.Pozycja Amazonka, malarka, zakonnica. O Celinie Michałowskiej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Kulesza, MonikaThe paper focuses on the life story of Celina Michałowska, daughter of the famous painter Piotr Michałowski. In 1868 she entered the Convent of Sisters of Immaculate Conception, whose cofounder, Sister Marcelina Darowska, had chosen Jazłowiec in Podolia as its principal seat. Celina, having adopted the name of Maria Celina of the Holy Trinity, spent half a century in Ukraine, serving the convent with her artistic talent. She developed the painting skills in her pupils, taught aetshetics as well as English, worked on translations and developed her own painting talent. In the convent workshop she painted pictures which later adorned other houses of the convent, chapels, churches and Uniate churches in Podolia. The present paper is aimed to shed a new light on the person of Celina Michałowska with the use of her unpublished correspondence with Blessed Marcelina Darowska.Pozycja W poszukiwaniu miejsc trzecich w podróżopisarstwie XIX wieku na przykładzie „Tour through England” Izabeli z Flemingów Czartoryskiej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Popławski, MarcinThe paper aims at presenting the concept of a third place and indicating how it can be applied to critical reading of travelogues. The concept of third places, presented in the ’70s by Ray Oldenburg, corresponds to a research movement searching correlation between literature and space according to the principles of the spatial turn. The application of the concept of third places seems to be of special interest during the reading of travel journals. Reactions and behavior of protagonists in third places lead to a new perspective on the person-place relation and settles a traveller in the role of a newcomer as opposed to a regular. An example of a travelogue for analysis is Tour through England by Izabela Czartoryska neé Fleming.Pozycja Cztery cząstki wyobraźni poetyckiej Juliana Przybosia: Podgórze i gotyckie katedry, Holokaust i Atlantyk(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Obremski, KrzysztofThe paper consists of two parts. The first one is dedicated to Przyboś as a son of Podgórze and to his relations with gothic cathedrals. The second one is dedicated the connection between the Atlantic and the Holocaust, and it is constituted around the idea of double vastness: the enormity of ocean waters and the martyrdom of the Jews; the poetic importance, however, lying not only in the very comparison, but in the possibility of proving its legitimacy.Pozycja Saksonia i Saksończycy w świetle pamięci o uniach polsko-saskich w wybranych relacjach pamiętnikarskich Polaków z pierwszej połowy XIX wieku(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Grzęda, EwaThis present paper is an attempt to trace the reception of the Polish-Saxon relations (in a polonized Polish-Saxon version) in the first half of the nineteenth century, recorded in selected memoirs and epistolary notes from that period. The point of reference in this case is the historical personal unions between Poland and Saxony, i.e. the history of political relations. The basic subject of the analysis are the interpersonal relations between Poles and Saxons in the post-partition period, at a time when there were about 10,000 Poles in Saxony seeking asylum after leaving the Polish lands during the November Uprising, and the ways of taming the space characterized by the signs of the common political past. The memory of Polish- -Saxon personal unions seems to have made it easier for Poles to adapt to the new social and even linguistic situation. As it appears, the interest of Poles in Saxony at that time was not only limited to seeking political asylum, but also had a tourist and cognitive dimension. Poles discoverd Saxon Switzerland and learned how to do mountain tourism before going to their native Tatra Mountains. The basis for this paper is a selection of accounts and diaries of Andrzej Edward Koźmian, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Klementyna Hoffmanowa nee Tańska, Juliusz Słowacki’s correspondence and Stanisław Deszert’s manuscript journal.
