Słowo o V Kongresie Mediewistów Polskich w Rzeszowie(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Trościński, GrzegorzBetween September 20th and 24th, 2015 Rzeszów hosted the Fifth Congress of Polish Medievalists, which was attended by about 250 scholars of the Middle Ages from all academic centres in Poland and from abroad. The congress theme was “Reception and Rejection. Intercultural Contacts in the Middle Ages”. A large number of papers were presented in 20 thematic sections. One section, no. 17, entitled “Translatio studii in the intellectual and literary culture of the Middle Ages”, was organized by Professor Andrzej Dąbrówka from the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Grzegorz Trościński, Ph.D. from the Old Polish and Enlightenment Literature Department of the University of Rzeszów. The speakers included philosophers, historians of Polish literature and linguists from several academic centres in Poland. The papers focused on the main intellectual current of the Middle Ages, depicted from various perspectives and shown at different angles. Translatio studii turned out to be multifaceted and long-lasting.Pozycja W sukurs pamięci. Kilka uwag o diariuszu i pamiętnikach Mieczysława Marcinkowskiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Setlak, WiesławMieczysław Marcinkowski’s diary entitled "Wbrew losowi. Z partyzantki i tułaczki 1939–1945" was created in two periods of the author’s life and two geographical and cultural areas (Subcarpathia during wartime in Poland and California in the 1990s). Developed by a group of Rzeszów scientists, the diary of a Home Army fighter in Subcarpathia, later a refugee, now living in Pasadena, USA, is a record of events, experiences and reflections from wartime occupation and postwar exile. It is a convincing record of facts, which makes it a valuable source text for historians. It is also a work of some literary quality, written in spontaneous and sincere language that triggers empathy in the reader, and it is fairly original at the composition level.Pozycja Sienkiewicza przygody z literaturą „trzecią”(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Szargot, BarbaraThe article is a review of the book by Agnieszka Kuniczuk-Trzcinowicz, "Sienkiewicza talent i intuicja. Studia i szkice" ["Talent and Intuition of Sienkiewicz. Studies and Sketches"], published in Opole in 2014. The publication is an interesting example of analysis of relations between popular literary conventions and the works by Sienkiewicz. According to the reviewer, the essential merit of the book is the ambitious comparative idea – conventions of popular literature are observed not only in the novels by Henryk Sienkiewicz, but also in other 19th century works that belong to the canon of high literature.Pozycja Po zagładzie Rzeczypospolitej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Maciąg, KazimierzIn his review Kazimierz Maciąg analyses a three-volume study by Piotr Żbikowski on the Polish language press “for the Poles” published in the three partitions in the period between the loss of independence and the entry of Napoleon’s army on Polish soil ("Pod rządami Franciszka Habsburga – cesarza Austrii"; "W monarchii pruskiej"; "W imperium carów"). The books by this eminent scholar of literature from the end of the 18th to the first decades of the 19th c. depict an extremely interesting panorama of the life of Polish people in the first decade after the partitions. We shall find in them not only an outline of the political situation, but also remarks on economic life, education and cultural changes on Polish soil. The documentary value of Piotr Żbikowski’s study is no less important as we shall find numerous examples illustrating the life of the three monarchs’ new subjects.Pozycja Odyniec po drugiej stronie lustra(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Szargot, MaciejThe article is a review of the book by Maria Makaruk, "Antoni Edward Odyniec – romantyk w zwierciadle biedermeieru", which was published in Warsaw in 2012. The book is devoted to the life and works of the poet connected with two literary currents, Romanticism and Biedermeier. This interesting and valuable volume is complemented by an anthology of Odyniec’s works.Pozycja Związki literatury sowizdrzalskiej z subkulturą hip-hopu. Intertekstualny dialog(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Maciejczyk, BeataThe article attempts to juxtapose the Polish picaresque literature of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and contemporary Polish hip-hop lyrics. It focuses on a dialogue between products of cultures that are distant from one another temporally. Intertextuality, as a research tool, creates an interesting way of looking at such seemingly dissimilar cultural phenomena, and the result of these investigations shows a clear dialogism of these texts.Pozycja Listy Kazimierza Wyki i Stanisława Pigonia do księdza Jana Wiśniewskiego w sprawie autografów Adama Mickiewicza i Cypriana Kamila Norwida(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Trościński, GrzegorzThe article is dedicated to an unknown letters of Kazimierz Wyka and Stanisław Pigoń to the priest Jan Wiśniewski, which were found in the Diocesan Library in Sandomierz. Both resarchers wishd to gain access to the works of Adam Mickiewicz and Cyprian Kamil Norwid. The main contents of these letters are requests for a possibility of reading authographs of these works. Jan Wiśniewski was a known and worthy collector of Polish memorabilia. Stanisław Pigoń was reasercher and publisher of the works of Adam Mickiewicz. Kazimierz Wyka, as a historian of Polish literature, studied works of Cyprian Kamil Norwid.Pozycja Nowa książka o Pigoniu. Słowo autora(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Kłak, CzesławIn his book on Stanisław Pigoń, the author outlines the legend of an eminent humanist, literary historian, memoirist, editor, teacher and tutor of many generations of scholars of Polish literature. The narrative is based on his own recollections (as his student) and on extensive correspondence between the professor and Ignacy Chrzanowski, Roman Pollak, Julian Krzyżanowski, Tadeusz Mikulski, Czesław Zgorzelski, Maria Danilewiczowa, and Bishop Ignacy Świrski. This correspondence allows us to take a closer look at the complex problems that the emerging academic milieu of scholars of Polish studies was facing in the difficult postwar times. The volume concludes with a recently uncovered source material – letters of Professor Pigoń to Bishop Świrski – which reveals the secrets of his technique as a literary analyst of Part II of "Dziady" ["Forefathers’ Eve"] by Adam Mickiewicz.Pozycja Okulary Traugutta. Z dziejów przedmiotu i motywu literackiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Rusin, JoannaRomuald Traugutt was short-sighted. He wore glasses from his early years until the last moments of his life. A moment before the execution, he took them off and threw them on the ground. They had survived their owner – today they are kept in the Licheń sanctuary. The motif of Romuald Traugutt’s glasses is a frequent and important component of his literary legend. It appears multiple times in literature – from "Gloria Victis" by Eliza Orzeszkowa to the poem "Gest" ["Gesture"] by Stanisław Grochowiak.Pozycja „Lud «Koranu» – lud «Ewangelii»”. Norwid o genezie islamu i historii relacji chrześcijańsko-muzułmańskich(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Gadamska-Serafin, RenataIn addition to the western Mediterranean culture, Cyprian Kamil Norwid’s cultural interests also include the world of Islam and the civilization of the East. As emerges from the poet’s surviving letters and notes, his interest focused mainly on the question of the origins of the Muslim religion and the centuries-old history of Christian-Muslim relations. As a descendant of King John III Sobieski, the victor over Turks at Vienna, and an avid reader of "Jerusalem Delivered" by Tasso, Norwid simply could not neglect this issue in his ruminations and studies. His notes on Islam in "Album Orbis" were illustrated with many graphics and drawings related to eastern themes. It seems that Norwid’s historical approach to Muslim issues was to a large extent shaped by some patristic sources, and first of all by writings of Saint John of Damascus, rather than by his contemporary scientific or travelogue orientalism.Pozycja Rękopiśmienne wierszowane litteraria od średniowiecza do końca XVIII wieku w zbiorach benedyktynek sandomierskich. Część druga: winszujące kolędy klasztorne dla ksieni Marianny Siemianowskiej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Trościński, GrzegorzThe article describes the collection of carols which were written in the Benedictine convent in Sandomierz in the latter half of the 18th century. They belong to the type of congratulatory carols and were dedicated to Prioress Marianna Siemianowska on the occasion of subsequent jubilees of her office as prioress of the Benedictines in Sandomierz. They are preserved in manuscript in Diocesan Library in Sandomierz. They are an interesting contribution to the history of convent folklore and research into the customs of the Benedictine Order in Sandomierz. The pieces centre upon two fundamental themes: firstly, the birth of Christ, and, secondly, creation of the panegyric image of the prioress as well as wishes on the occasion of Christmas and the jubilee.Pozycja Zlecenia o tematyce religijnej realizowane w lwowskiej tłoczni gubernialnej w latach 1773–1800(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Rusińska-Giertych, HalinaThe article focuses on the religious publications that were issued in Lvov in 1773-1800 by the printing press of the Lvov province, which belonged to Antoni Piller and later to his successors. Since the Pillers’ printing press was the only one active in the town between the latter half of the 1780s and the end of the 1790s, it accepted, apart from governmental printing orders, other commissions, including church and monastic ones. About thirty five religious texts were released by them. They were mostly prayer books and sermons, but also textbooks and religious education books, teaching guides for catechists, excerpts facilitating the understanding of the Gospel, as well as summaries of important Western European works that had an impact upon understanding the Christian religion and the debate of the existence of God.Pozycja „Pociesz i mię tu na chwilę…” Problematyka religijna Pieśni Nikodema Muśnickiego SJ(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Janiec, AdamThe article presents the most important religious themes in "Pieśni" ["Songs"] by Nikodem Muśnicki, a Jesuit from Polotsk, who was active during the Enlightenment. His biography, as presented in the introductory section, places him among forgotten writers, representatives of classicism after King Stanislaus II, and is a starting point in the interpretation of his songs. The analysis of selected pieces, published in the volume "Drobniejsze poetyckie zabawki" ["Smaller Poetic Toys"] and those which remained in manuscript, clearly indicates that Muśnicki chose the most important religious problems as his object of poetic reflection. He is interested in God, man and the world. Within these themes he also analyses more detailed issues: the essence of the Supreme Being, the existential situation of the human being, the place of man in the universe, and, last but not least, relations of God and man. The poet’s works are an interesting example of Polish religious poetry during the Enlightenment.Pozycja Powiedziane i przemilczane. Rzecz o katolicyzmie Ignacego Krasickiego na podstawie jego twórczości literackiej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Magryś, RomanThe article presents Ignacy Krasicki’s religiousness in the light of anthropology, which assumes that the man can, at the same time, show different attitudes concerning his outlook, resulting from being affected by simultaneous contradictory cultural paradigms. The author reveals the symptoms of secular thinking on the foundations of human morality in literary texts by the Bishop of Warmia, accompanied by religious traditionalism in the same or different literary works. The goal of the article is to provoke discussion on the personality of people in the Age of Enlightenment, which may not be explicit, but can be composed of heterogenous cultural elements.Pozycja Utwory religijne Konstancji Benisławskiej a tradycja mistyki hiszpańskiej (św. Teresa z Ávili, św. Jan od Krzyża)(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Demkowicz, AgataKonstancja Benisławska was the author of only one collection, entitled "Pieśni sobie śpiewane" ["Songs Sung to Oneself, by Konstancja von Ryck Benisławska, wife of the pantler of the Duchy of Livonia, published with encouragement from friends and taken from rural shadow into daylight in Vilnus in 1776"]. It was published in a special period for the Republic of Poland when ideologies from Western Europe became popular in our country. Under the influence of views of French encyclopaedists and Voltaire, efforts for a thorough reform of political, social and cultural institutions began to be made. Transformations were the major talking point in press and literature of those days. Some social circles i.e. representatives of aristocracy, rich nobility and even clergy, started to become interested in the new laic model of spiritual life proposed by Western thinkers. According to philosophers, the Catholic Church proclaimed outdated ideas and stood in the way of development and civilization. Despite the applause for anti-Catholic ideas, the role and teachings of the Catholic Church in the Republic of Poland were not questioned. It contributed to a free development of religious literature. The volume of Benisławska, who was shaped in the spirit of great Spanish mystics, was inspired by love towards God. That feeling mobilizes the poet to continuous search for contact with the Creator, entering into deeper relations. The volume, which is a sort of “poetic prayer book,” is an account of her spiritual experience and feelings.Pozycja Taniec na Golgocie w medytacyjnym zbiorze Plęsy Jezusa z aniołami Marcina Hińczy(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Bielak, AlicjaThe aim of the article is to present the 17th-century meditations of Jesuit Marcin Hińcza entitled "Plęsy Jezusa z aniołami" ["Jesus Dancing with Angels"] in the context of Ignatius of Loyola’s meditation method and the main topic of the work which is the cosmic dance. Hińcza used the dance metaphor in quite the paradoxical way, because as opposed to the moralistic writings of his times he didn’t criticise it but rather applied to explain allegorically God’s plan on earth and the idea of imitatio Christi. In the title of his work Hińcza used the word “pląs” which in Polish means: dancing, jumping, applauding and also triumphing. This variety of significations served the autor to present the cosmic meaning of Christ’s “dance”. In "Plęsy Jezusa z aniołami" Jesus has “jumped” from heavens to the womb of Virgin Mary, then he “jumped out” to the earth to run it around (as Logos), next He “jumped” upon the cross on Calvary and triumphantly made his last “jump” back to Heavens. According to the meditative idea of imitatio worshippers should imitate the angels in supporting the Saviour in his “leaps”. The interpretational background of the article are the New Testament apocrypha and the Church Fathers’ writings.Pozycja Godzinki o Niepokalanym Poczęciu Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Glosy, hipotezy, interpretacje(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Sulikowski, AndrzejThe article concerns an Old Polish matins to the Holy Mary from the 17th century, which were created as a sung prayer, especially for laics. Its composition is similar to the breviary office of the Catholic Church, whereas the versification is based on prominent poetry examples from the Polish Renaissance (Jan Kochanowski, Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński et al.). The author states that this form of prayer was attacked or even ridiculed in the times of reformation and counter-reformation by Protestant writers. Thanks to philological analysis of every distich – with consideration of the European background – the author shows intense and direct relations of the text to the Bible in Renaissance translations (priest Jakub Wujek, the Gdańsk Bible) and sometimes also to Marian apocryphic texts. A crucial role is played here by the symbolism of numbers (especially 7, 3, 1) and the semantic differences in many lexemes and language forms of the virtually 16th century Polish, if compared with contemporary Polish. A full concretization of this poetic cycle becomes visible when the text is sung first – hence the musical and prosodic aspects of the Little Office: its melodic line, physiological effects as the deepening and regularity of the breath have been considered. This is the way the prayer influences the human body, it opens and purifies the spiritual space for the influence of God’s grace. The author localized the prayer within the daily cycle of Old Polish and contemporary civilization, he pointed out the radical changes in life habits within the last century and an evolution of folk spirituality. The Little Office also has its place in the weekly cycle whereby every part is assigned to one specific day of the week. During the philological and prosodic analysis potential performers of the Little Office in Old Poland from the circles of peasants and craftsmen were named. The text has been well acquired in the community for twenty generations – the Little Office is often sung from memory exclusively. Because of the sociological changes it pervaded, thanks to the Roman-Catholic liturgy, into the contemporary urban ceremonial.Pozycja Tragedia Saul Vittorio Alfieriego w adaptacji Wojciecha Bogusławskiego. Rekonesans badawczy(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Purgał, LiwiaThe work of Wojciech Bogusławski, adaptation from the tragedy by Vittorio Alfieri, depicts two characters who present their arguments to each other. King Saul is characterized by cruelty and quite pathological pride, whereas David, his adversary, is noble, valiant and ready to sacrifice himself for the good of his country. The events of the tragedy are modelled after the biblical story of King Saul, who is abandoned by the spirit of God, and David, favoured with the blessing of the Creator, presented in the First Book of Samuel. Yet, the tragedy of Alfieri-Bogusławski is not only a rephrased version of the biblical text because the time of the plot begins when the story in the Bible finishes. The biblical events in the tragedy are shown in flashback. The paper is a research reconnaissance, as it presents fundamental remarks on the interpretation of the tragedy and suggestions for further study, especially concerning the function of the characters’ performance. Further examination is needed of the technique used by Bogusławski in adapting the work of Alfieri, and of the translation. The paper only presents general characteristics of the Polish translator’s decisions. Boguławski himself was aware of the consequences of translating a rhyming piece as prose. He strove to write concisely, to salvage the depth of thought and the expressive power of the original, to preserve most of the language, which would enable accurate communication with the reader, delight of the audiences, compassion for the characters, pity, fear, and thus to recreate high style in order to reproduce the category of grandeur, pathos and heroism. From the analysis of selected aspects of Bogusławski’s literary technique and artistry, it appears that the tragedy is an artistically mature piece and should be subject to further, more detailed study.Pozycja Tematyka religijna w dramacie jezuickim z połowy XVIII wieku (na przykładzie twórczości Jana Bielskiego)(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Mieszek, MałgorzataThe article focuses upon the religious subject matter of Jesuit dramas from the 18th century, discussed on the example of works of Jan Bielski. Bielski was a representative of the generation of dramatists who initiated transformation of Jesuit theatre. Religious issues were still a predominant feature in Jesuit tragedies from the 18th century. Bielski subordinated them to Jesuits’ new educational trends. The author incorporated religious themes into dramatic conflicts. However, he closely connected religious issues with secular ones. In some tragedies, religious issues were predominant, in others they coexisted with the historical subject matter and completed it significantly. Bielski also used the earlier tradition of a morality play, but he supplemented the scheme with emotions and tenderness. It corresponded to the new classical aesthetics. Religious issues became part of theatre’s moralizing purpose. At the same time, Bielski’s dramas reflected the changes which occurred in Jesuit theatre’s perception of religiousnesses.
