Abstrakt

The article analyses how people are affected by the necessity to leave their previous place of residence. They left behind everything they knew. They could no longer return to where they came from – they had to start all over again. In the novel Toń, Ishbel Szatrawska describes Masuria during and just after World War II. People of German, Polish and Lithuanian nationality meet there. W.G. Sebald in his books The Emigrants and Austerlitz, presents portraits of people who, having left their homeland, always felt excluded, alienated, “not from here” in their new places. Selected works show how the trauma of exclusion affected their memory and sense of identity. They only have the present, but the past has a strong influence on it.
