Język i polityka. Inteligencja galicyjska w sporze o kształt języka ukraińskiego w XIX wieku

Abstract

Artykuł przedstawia wybrane etapy formowania się literackiego języka ukraińskiego w Galicji na tle relacji polsko-ukraińskich oraz rosyjsko-galicyjskich. Punktem wyjścia debaty językowej było odniesienie do alfabetu łacińskiego i języka cerkiewnosłowiańskiego. Alfabet łaciński Ukraińcy szybko odrzucili z obawy przed polonizacją, ale w przypadku cyrylicy problemem był wybór między historycznym alfabetem cerkiewnym a grażdanką (pismo cywilne) używaną w Rosji. Elity polskie poparły alfabet cerkiewny w przekonaniu, że będzie stanowił zaporę przed wpływem języka rosyjskiego na tożsamość narodową Rusinów (Ukraińców).

This article presents selected stages of the formation of the Ukrainian literary language in Galicia against the background of Polish-Ukrainian and Russian-Galician relations. The starting point of the linguistic debate was a reference to the Latin alphabet and the Church Slavonic language. Ukrainians quickly rejected the Latin alphabet for fear of Polonization, but in the case of the Cyrillic alphabet, the problem was the choice between the historical church type of Cyrillic alphabet and the Grazhdanka alphabet (Civil Script) used in Russia. Polish elites supported the church alphabet in the belief that it will constitute a barrier against the influence of the Russian language on the national identity of Rusyns (Ukrainians).
