Inteligenci w mundurach? Próba charakterystyki oficerów austro-węgierskich w Galicji jako specyficznej grupy społecznej

Abstract

Problem zaliczenia XIX-wiecznego korpusu oficerskiego monarchii habsburskiej do inteligencji jest kwestią sporną. Niektórzy polscy badacze bez wahania włączają to środowisko do tej warstwy, inni je ignorują. Pod względem wykształcenia formalnego (matura) nie wszyscy oficerowie austro-węgierscy spełniali minimalny wymóg zaliczenia do inteligencji. Dominująca wśród oficerów ponadnarodowa samoidentyfikacja jako „cesarskich” stała się w końcu XIX w. anachronizmem. Część oficerów w Galicji podjęła podobne formy aktywności jak cywilni inteligenci: zakładanie towarzystw popularnonaukowych, organizację przedstawień teatralnych, zwalczanie analfabetyzmu wśród rekrutów. Inicjatywy te nie wykraczały jednak poza armię i były związane głównie z kulturą niemieckojęzyczną.

The problem of classifying the 19th-century officer corps of the Habsburg monarchy as intelligentsia is a debatable issue. Some Polish researchers include this milieu in this stratum without hesitation, while others ignore it. In terms of formal education (high school diplomas), not all Austro-Hungarian officers met the minimum requirement to be included in the ranks of the intelligentsia. The dominant transnational self-identification among officers as 'imperial' had become an anachronism by the end of the 19th century. Some officers in Galicia undertook similar forms of activity to the civilian intelligentsia: founding popular science societies, organising theatrical performances, or combating illiteracy among recruits. However, these initiatives did not extend beyond the army and were mainly related to German-speaking culture.
