Pozycja Bizarne opowieści Dominiki Słowik(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2022-12) Piechota, Dariusz“Samosiejki” by Dominika Słowik is a collection of short stories which belongs to recent realist prose that willingly uses the fairy-tale convention. The category of bizarreness plays a key role in this collection, as it is closely related to the world of nature. The protagonists become witnesses to weather anomalies and aberrations in nature, which brings to mind pessimistic visions of an impending ecological disaster. The protagonists are not only observers of the changes taking place in the natural environment, but they also notice the anomalies in themselves. In “Samosiejki” the blurring of the boundary between what is real and what is fairy-tale also includes the boundary between species.Pozycja „Ludzie bezdomni” Stefana Żeromskiego jako prefiguracja współczesnej powieści ekologicznej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2021) Piechota, DariuszThis article attempts to read Żeromski’s novel as a prefiguration of a contemporary ecological novel. The green reading of the writer’s work redirects readers’ attention towards non-human forms of life, introducing alternative optics for describing reality. The story of Tomasz Judym is tangled with the history of the natural world. While wandering around Paris, Warsaw, Cisy and Zagłębie, the protagonist notices the symptoms which prove the progressive degradation of the natural environment. As one of the few protagonists, he sees the destructive impact of industry on the natural environment. Judym is abandoning the anthropocentric perspective in favour of the biocentric one, making him more sensitive to the suffering of others, understood here as non-human inhabitants of the Earth. Nature is a self-regulating living organism, a powerful element whose contemplation can both delight and frighten. “Ludzie bezdomni” anticipates contemporary ecological thinking, which calls for rational use of earthly goods.Pozycja Melancholics on the Vistula River(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2020) Piechota, DariuszThe article discusses the theme of melancholy in Polish prose of the 21st century, using four contemporary novels – „Pokolenie Ikea” [The IKEA generation] (2012) by Piotr C., „Wszyscy jesteśmy hipsterami” [We are all hipsters] (2016) by Dariusz Radecki, „Melanżeria” [Melangery] (2011) by Anna Klara Majewska and „Za pięć rewolta” [Five minutes to a revolt] (2011) by Dawid Kain – as conspicuous examples of its presence. The author suggests that due to the increased pace of social and technological changes the generation of thirty-year-olds experiences a feeling of melancholy, formerly characteristic for elderly people and analyses the protagonists of the novels selected to present how they cope with a reality that does not fulfil them.Pozycja Melancholicy nad Wisłą(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2018) Piechota, DariuszThe theme of melancholy in the Polish prose of the 21st century is still valid and directly related to the issue of identity and maturity of protagonists. People who suffer from depression exist in a world in which “ all that is solid, melts into the air”. This feeling complicates their existence because they often cannot describe their own identity (both individual and collective). The modern homo melancholicus often treats his or her own life as someone else’s project, which intensifies the experience of incoherent self-image and sense of alienation. In the latest realistic prose, reflections on passing away appear in thirty-year-old protagonists who lose the illusion of a quick career which would give them (apparently) happiness. Recalling the past, rooted in communist Poland, turns out to be a type of autotherapy. Melancholics see their lives as scattered, deformed, similar to the puzzles that should be put together again. The ongoing depersonalization and identity problems make that the heroes wander around the labyrinth, looking for a way out of it. The experience of melancholy proves to be the experience of transgression in which a person can find himself by accepting the complexity of the world.Pozycja Reaktywacje dziewiętnastowieczności w najnowszej literaturze popularnej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2015) Piechota, DariuszThe paper characterizes recent works belonging to popular literature from the viewpoint of 20th century literature. It turns out that realism as the cultural paradigm is still present in postmodern prose. 19th century literature provides us with a number of narrative structures and motifs which are constantly altered by contemporary writers. In this paper we focus on texts which directly refer to 'Lalka' written by Bolesław Prus (such as 'Alkaloid' by A. Głowacki and 'Córka Wokulskiego' by R. Praszyński) as well as works which indirectly refer to the Victorian era. The dilemmas of burghers living in the second half of the 19th century are still present in the literature of the 21st century. Characters existing in a period of constant change search for their own identity and – frequently – misfits 'come out' and talk about their lives from the viewpoint of an excluded person. It is fitting to add that empathy with neighbors seems to be a very important feature of both 19th century and contemporary narrations.Pozycja Zombie nad Wisłą. Na marginesie powieści Igora Ostachowicza i Jacka Dehnela(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2020) Piechota, DariuszThis article is an attempt to answer the question why zombie motif is so popular in contemporary Polish literature. The author analyses two novels („Noc żywych Żydów” by Ostachowicz, „Ale z naszymi umarłymi” by Dehnel) in which zombies appear. In Ostachowicz’s novel they symbolize Jewish people, who were killed during the 2nd World War. In his story the writer indicates the fact that Polish society has forgotten about their existence. Whereas in Dehnel’s novel zombie symbolizes fascism which is rising in contemporary Poland. It is worth mentioning that both writers use post-apocalyptic genre to talk about fears and prejudice of Polish society. What is more, the writers indicate that violence is now a huge problem in Poland. This convention seems to be the most adequate to discuss about moral condition of society.
