Unia Europejska do 2030 r. planuje objąć produkcją ekologiczną 25% gruntów rolnych położonych na jej terenie. Austria już w 2019 r. osiągnęła poziom 26% powierzchni upraw ekologicznych, a w Estonii i Szwecji wskaźnik ten przekroczył 20%. W Polsce w 2020 r. powierzchnia upraw ekologicznych wynosiła jedynie 3,4% całkowitej powierzchni użytków rolnych. W 2022 r. w UE metodami ekologicznymi utrzymywano tylko 7,2% stad bydła mięsnego, 4,9% krów mlecznych, 10,4% owiec i 12,7% kóz w odniesieniu do stad konwencjonalnych.
The European Union intends to bring 25% of its agricultural land under organic production by 2030. Austria had already achieved 26% of its cultivated area under organic management by 2019, and both Estonia and Sweden likewise exceeded the 20% threshold. In Poland, however, only 3.4% of the total agricultural land was devoted to organic cultivation in 2020. By 2022, within the EU, organic methods were used to maintain merely 7.2% of beef cattle herds, 4.9% of dairy cow populations, 10.4% of sheep, and 12.7% of goat herds, compared to their conventional counterparts. The largest global markets for organic products were the United States, Germany, and China. In 2022, European consumers spent on average €64 per capita on organic food overall, and €102 per capita within the European Union alone.
