dc.description.abstract	Przedmiotem niniejszej dysertacji jest analiza problematyki wczesnośredniowiecznych toporów pochodzących z terenu dzisiejszej Polski, datowanych od VI po połowę XIII w. Oparto ją na zbiorze 891 zabytków, uzupełniając interpretacją źródeł pisanych i ikonograficznych. Wychodząc od zagadnień szczegółowych, najpierw omówiono technologię wykonywania żeleźców oraz zastosowane techniki zdobnicze. Jednym z najważniejszych etapów badawczych była szczegółowa analiza typologicznochronologiczna żeleźców, sklasyfikowanych według zaproponowanej przez autora, nowej typologii. Oddzielne uwagi poświęcono też drewnianym toporzyskom, w tym preferencjom surowcowym i materiałowym ich wytwórców. Kolejno przyjrzano się sposobom łączenia żeleźców z toporzyskami oraz przechowywaniu toporów. Jednym z najistotniejszych pytań postawionych w pracy była kwestia funkcji wczesnośredniowiecznych toporów. Za podstawowy element różnicujący broń od narzędzia uznano masę żeleźców. Omówiono też pozautylitarne znaczenie toporów - ich rolę jako wyznacznika statusu społecznego oraz elementu magiczno-obrzędowych praktyk religijnych. Końcowe rozważania poświęcono roli topora w życiu społeczności zamieszkujących we wczesnym średniowieczu ziemie polskie. Stwierdzono, że na znaczeniu zyskuje on dopiero w IX stuleciu, a apogeum jego użytkowania przypada na okres od ok. połowy X po połowę XII w. Przyjrzano się również roli toporów wśród ludów bałtyjskich oraz na terenie księstw zachodnioruskich.	pl_PL.UTF-8
dc.description.abstract	The main aim of this dissertation was the comprehensive analysis of early medieval axes from the 6th to the end of the 1st half of the 13th c. which come from the territory of present-day Poland. It was based mostly on the set of 891 artefacts, but their analysis was supplemented by the interpretation of historical and iconographical sources. At first, the technology of axe heads and techniques of decoration were discussed. The most important element of research process was the typo-chronological analysis of axe heads, which were classified by the new universal author’s typology. Some remarks were devoted to the wooden hafts, e.g., material preferences of their makers. In next steps, the joining devices of axe heads with hafts were discussed, as well as problems of preservation of the axes. One of the most important questions given in this monograph was the problem of the function of the analysed axes. As a background element differentiating a weapon from a tool was the weight of the axe heads acknowledged. Except the utilitarian destiny, the axe served the important function as a social status indicant and as an element of magical-ceremonial religious practices. The final consideration was given to the role of the axe in the life of communities living in the early medieval Polish lands. It was noted that the axe gained in importance significantly in the 9th c., but a climax of its usage was in the period of ca. 2nd half of the 10th to 1st half of the 12th c. The role of the axes in the Western Baltic tribes and in the Western Ruthenian duchies was also discussed.	pl_PL.UTF-8
