Discussions on the condition of Europe and on the European idea among intellectuals, especially German-speaking writers, have a long and rich history. Goethe and Schiller already spoke about in the 18th century and Novalis in the 19th century, the latter pointing to the European cultural community. After the experiences of the First and Second World Wars, of the cruelty and barbarity of warfare, of dehumanization and mass murder, the discussions on the essence of Europe revived. Richard Nikolaus Coudenhove-Kalergi and Heinrich Mann suggested the creation of a European Community which, although far from today’s European Union, in theory was supposed to serve as a protection against the repetition of nationalism and wars. In 1992 the European Union was founded on the groundwork of the EEC. Austrian-born Robert Menasse is another German-language writer who actively defends the European Union by proclaiming radical views, namely the departure from the nations and the creation of the Republic of Europe. His 2017 novel Die Hauptstadt (The Capital), awarded the Deutscher Buchpreis (German Book Prize) literary prize, is a tribute to Europe and an important contribution to the discussion on the European community and its future. Through the mouth of his alter ego in the novel, Prof. Alois Erhart, Menasse calls for the rejection of the attachment to nations and the creation of Europe of Regions. The book is basically the first European novel (about the European Union) by a German-writing author with such a progressive message. In the novel, the author, shows, against the background of the life of EU officials in Brussels, the reality of Europe, the understanding of national and European identity and the burden of the Holocaust and the bestiality of nationalism for contemporary Europeans. The present paper discusses these views and inscribes them in the long lasting debate on Europe, indicating at the same time the progressiveness of the European idea.

Rozprawa doktorska Martyrologia Polaków na Kresach południowo-wschodnich w latach 1939-1945. Studium socjologiczne dotyczy badań, przeprowadzonych w oparciu o główne dzieła polskiej literatury kresowej (prozy) oraz realia historyczne. Główny problem tego studium sprowadza się do pytania: Jak wyglądała martyrologia polskiej ludności kresowej w okresie 1939-1945 w świetle historii i literatury pięknej? W studium posłużono się wieloma metodami socjologicznymi, wśród których rozróżniono metody zasadnicze i pomocnicze. Dysertację ustrukturyzowano w siedmiu rozdziałach. Poza trzema pierwszymi rozdziałami, potraktowanymi jako wprowadzające, na korpus pracy składają się rozdziały 4-6, zaś ostatni jest poświęcony współczesnym stosunkom polsko-ukraińskim. Zakończenie zawiera konkluzje, wynikające z przeprowadzonych badań. Praca ma charakter interdyscyplinarny. Ujęcie socjologiczne połączone zostało z perspektywą historyczną i literacką. Niniejsza dysertacja stawia zadania i otwiera nowe perspektywy badawcze problematyki martyrologii kresowian w świetle nie tylko socjologii i historii, ale przede wszystkim socjologii literatury. Osiągnięte rezultaty przeprowadzonych badań pozwalają nakreślić dalsze poszukiwania w zakresie socjologii.
Nationalism, modernity, museums. Inspiration by the theory of Ernst Gellner

The study deals with the issue of nationalism and its emphasis on national identities, which have occupied a specific position in museums since the 19th century. Nationalism understands the study as a modern phenomenon, which was created by specific structural conditions, functions and changes connected with the advent of modernity. It is precisely the conditions for the emergence of nationalism that the study pays attention to, and through the analysis of Ernst Gellner's theory it seeks to define the main attributes from which the emergence and persistence of nationalism derive. To this end, the study will present the basic characteristics of a traditional society in which there were no suitable conditions for the existence of nationalism, and subsequently show how these conditions were born by the transition of society from traditional to modern. With regard to the theme of nationalism, the social change that took place and the basic characteristics of modern society, which eventually created the breeding ground for the emergence and existence of nationalism, will be presented. The study then applies the issue of nationalism to museums. The study will outline how museums have transformed in the established modern society and what role nationalism has played in them. Finally, the study briefly reflects on the role that nationalism can play in museums today, viz. it will show which elements constructing national identity can potentially appear most in museums.
Ідеї політичної філософії Миколи Конрада у релігійно-філософському контексті кінця ХІХ – першої половини ХХ ст.: лібералізм, націоналізм, соціалізм

Artykuł zwraca uwagę na najważniejsze tezy Konradowskiej wizji nacjonalizmu i socjalizmu. Szczególną wagę przywiązuje do badania rozumienia liberalizmu, zwłaszcza politycznego. Własna wizja liberalizmu, socjalizmu i nacjonalizmu Konrada ukształtowała się na podstawie wczesnego neotomizmu, nauki społecznej Kościoła katolickiego i filozofów neotomistycznych. W ramach swoich badań Konrad rozważa zagadnienia polityczne i ekonomiczne w wymiarze filozoficznym, religijnym i moralnym. Pozwala to mówić o podejściu Konrada do liberalizmu nie tylko jako zjawiska społeczno-ekonomicznego, ale także idei filozofii politycznej.
