The main purpose of this article is the description and the functional analysis of metatextual formulas signaling the course of argumentation in the encyclicals of John Paul II. Among the studied constructions should be highlighted: indicators of the subject, indicators of the premises (introducing an argument from authority, introducing definitions, introducing commentary and explanation) and signaling devices of arguments and statements, proposals and conclusions. The aforementioned metatextual formulas play an important role in the communication process. They identify and specify moments that are particularly important in the complicated justification process. Emphasizing the strategic places of discource, they serve to start the appropriate perceptual processes in the recipient, thanks to which the text can be quickly integrated and interpreted accordingly.

Among formally and semantically diverse metatexts functioning in encyclicals of John Paul II a large group constitute formulas highlighting importance of introducing content. Recognition by the sender specified information as particularly important is motivated by the evaluation carried out by him, taking into account cognitive and religious criteria. In the analyzed metatextual structures we can distinguish formulas in which signaling importance is the only function, and formulas, in which signaling the importance of introducing content is an additional (accompanying) function, yet the main task of metatexts is naming and accentuating the strategic points of the discourse. Strictly evaluative formulas and persuasively characterized modal formulas, imperative formulas and emotional first-person formulas can be distinguished in both groups. Metatextual indicators signaling the importance of introducing content used by John Paul II are both structures specific to scientific texts, as well as structures peculiar and unusual for them, but characteristic of – for example – catechetical and preaching messages.
Metatekstemy o funkcji modalnej epistemicznej (na przykładzie encyklik Jana Pawła II)

Wśród licznych, zróżnicowanych formalnie i funkcjonalnie wyrażeń metatekstowych występujących w encyklikach Jana Pawła II ważne miejsce zajmują metatekstemy o funkcji modalnej epistemicznej. Tworzą one – istotny dla tego typu oficjalnych dokumentów kościelnych – papieski i autorski komentarz prawdziwościowy do formułowanych sądów oraz przedstawianych stanów rzeczy. Przeprowadzone analizy pozwoliły wyodrębnić: wyrażenia o funkcji modalnej pewności (metatekstemy potwierdzające prawdziwość wprowadzanych informacji (bez leksykalnych wykładników pewności) oraz metatekstemy wyrażające pewność nadawcy co do prawdziwości przekazywanych sądów, z leksykalnymi wykładnikami takiego osądu rzeczywistości), a także metatekstemy o funkcji modalnej możliwości. W obrębie wymienionych grup wydzielone zostały bardziej szczegółowe grupy funkcjonalno-znaczeniowe badanych wyrażeń metatekstowych.
Metatekstowe sygnalizatory tematu rozważań w encyklikach Jana Pawła II

The main aim of this article is a functional and semantical analysis of metatextual formulas introducing subject in encyclicals of John Paul II. The autor deems metatext a category of text characterized by a strongly pragmatic mark; it is an additional part of the text, functioning in paralel to the object text, informing about the way in which the main text is organized, or representing a specific commentary to the content of the latter The analysis shows that covered by the survey documents of the Church contain a variety of metatextual constructions, differing formally, introducing subject of statements. The objective of the reflections (main or partial) is introducing by: – solemn arenga; – specific for encyclicals initial sentences; – formally different first person constructions, often emotional and direct; – modal formulas; – evaluative formulas; – participle formulas; – direct and indirect questions.
