Stefan Harassek and the problems of contemporary philosophy

The influence of the national factor on philosophy is expressed in two models of the history of philosophy: the problem-oriented and the culturalist one. The culturalist variety of the history of philosophy includes not only the problems themselves, the ways in which they are solved and the reconstruction of the argumentation, but also the entire cultural context of a given philosophical oeuvre. Among factors influencing philosophy, the analysis also includes the national tradition in which the philosopher is situated. A culturalist history of philosophy requires a high degree of cultural competence and erudition. The researcher must be able to show the interrelationships of the various fields of human culture: philosophy, religion, science, literature, and visual arts. Writing a problem-based history of philosophy, on the other hand, requires the researcher to have developed analytical skills.

W artykule dokonuję prezentacji i analizy poglądów na źródła sztuki, jakie Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (1885‒1939) zawarł w jednym ze swych ostatnich dramatów ‒ Sonacie Belzebuba. Przedstawione tam filozoficzno-estetyczne poglądy Witkacego odnoszę do szerszego kontekstu jego poglądów na kulturę, a także do przemian myśli estetycznej i społecznego imaginarium XIX i XX w., co pozwala ukazać zarówno ich oryginalność, jak i punkty zbieżne z powszechniejszymi tendencjami myślowymi. Staram się pokazać, że utwór Witkiewicza opiera się upływowi czasu dzięki postawieniu problemów „metafizycznych” ‒ wykraczających poza zainteresowania konkretnej epoki ‒ jak też dzięki elementom komizmu i ironii czyniących zeń dzieło otwarte na wielość interpretacji.
Żyć, aby patrzeć. Refleksje o pięknie i użyteczności

The paper analyzes the relation between beauty and utility. The author examines those two values using examples from architecture, interior design, hand-icrafts and mass production. He advances the thesis that the order of beauty and the order of utility need not be separated or absolutized, particularly as regards the latter. He distinguishes between utility in a narrow sense, which is meant to satisfy current and basic needs, and utility in a broader sense, where what is beautiful usually turns out useful, as it provides energy to live, brings joy and aesthetic pleasure. Beautiful objects can also enhance social prestige of creators, customers and owners.
