Asymmetrical Portrayal of Gender in Magazines for Men with Particular Reference to Sexuality

This doctoral dissertation aims to investigate the relation between language and the media, and to provide an account of the representation of women and men in contemporary American magazines for men, and explores the role that stereotypes and idealized cognitive models play in determining how a woman and a man – as words and concepts – function in the contemporary press. It is predominantly based on the assumption that the ICMs of a woman and a man are metonymic models comprising several submodels. As a matter of fact, the ICMs presented in the analysed material, actually do not have complicated structures and the most productive submodels take dominance over the others and lead to discriminatory assumptions and generalisations. The second aim is to examine the specific role that metaphors play in perpetuating the view that men are constructed as strong and powerful aggressors, while women as weak, victimised and attacked. The analysis is carried out in the spirit of Cognitive Linguistics, with particular emphasis put on the notion of Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) conceptual metaphor framework, further discussed by other scholars, which constitutes one of the most expedient devices that can be applied in this kind of research. It is based on the assumption that in many cases, the overall view of sex seems to be one of hostility, violence and dominance.
