The building of new churches was one the key and unresolved questions in the relationships between the state and the Roman Catholic church in Poland in the period of the People’s Republic of Poland. The problem absorbed the attention of state administration, the communist party and the security police. They interfered in the development of parish networks, blocked the initiative to build new churches and heavily regulated the purchase of land and building materials. The aim of the hereby dissertation is to answer the question how it was possible, under the communist regime, to build new churches in the diocese of Częstochowa, what actions were undertaken by the clergy and the followers on the one hand and what counter methods did the state implement to prevent the construction of new churches. Between 1945 and 1956 twenty five churches were built or re-built in the Częstochowa diocese. In 1957 the state authorities imposed new laws to legally limit the initiative to build churches by the Church. Between 1957 and 1970 the diocesan curia of Częstochowa annually submitted the plans to build 4 to 21 religious buildings, however, it received the permit to build only two churches. Between 1971 and 1981 the diocesan curia of Częstochowa managed to overcome the resistance of the authorities and received the permission to built 33 churches. Between 1982 and 1985 the state authorities issued 24 permits to construct new churches in the Częstochowa diocese followed by further 8 in the period of 1986 and 1990. In 1986 there were 60 churches and 39 chapels under construction in the Częstochowa diocese.
