Istotny jest sposób, w jaki kategoria ta odzwierciedlona została w języku. Repertuar form językowych, za których pomocą wyrażano odczucie trudności danej drogi, jest bogaty – od wyrażeń opisowych, silnie zindywidualizowanych, nakierowanych głównie na oddanie osobistych przeżyć (jak miało to miejsce w początkach taternictwa), do określeń jedno-, dwuwyrazowych, a ostatecznie cyfr. Celem artykułu jest zarysowanie ewolucji językowych sposobów wyrażania stopnia trudności dróg wspinaczkowych z uwzględnieniem perspektywy oglądu właściwej wspinaczom dokonującym oceny (która wyraża się w świadomości własnej kondycji psychofizycznej powiązanej z umiejętnością wyjścia poza jednostkowe doświadczenie) oraz stopnia rozwoju opisywanej dyscypliny.One of the most important aspects of climbing is the question of assessing the difficulty of the route being climbed. The way in which this category has been reflected in language is important. The repertoire of linguistic forms used to express a feeling of the difficulty of a route is rich, ranging from descriptive, highly individualised expressions, aimed mainly at conveying personal experiences (as was the case in the early days of mountaineering), to one-, two-word expressions, and eventually numbers.
