Bazę informacyjną tworzą wyselekcjonowane opracowania poświęcone tej tematyce. W artykule przedstawiono uwarunkowania funkcjonowania szkolnictwa średniego i dynamikę rozwoju sieci szkolnej. Ponadto omówiono ustrój organizacyjny szkół. Następnie scharakteryzowano środowisko uczniów pod względem ich liczby, pochodzenia narodowościowego i społecznego. W artykule wskazano, że przez prawie sto lat władze austriackie niechętnie zgadzały się na tworzenie w Galicji szkół typu średniego. Proces ten przyśpieszył dopiero na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Szkoły te cieszyły się wśród młodzieży dużym zainteresowaniem, co powodowało ich przepełnienie i liczne problemy lokalowe. Wśród uczniów byli przedstawiciele różnych nacji zamieszkujących Galicję. W omawianym okresie szkoły zmieniały strukturę organizacyjną, profil edukacyjny i programy nauczania.The aim of this article is to analyze selected, most important issues concerning the organization and operation of the secondary education system in Galicia throughout the partition period. The information base is comprised of selected studies on this topic. The article presents the conditions for the operation of secondary education and the dynamics of the school network's development. Furthermore, the organizational structure of the schools is discussed. Next, the student population is characterized in terms of their number, national origin, and social background. The article points out that for almost a century, the Austrian authorities were reluctant to establish secondary schools in Galicia. This process accelerated only at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. These schools enjoyed considerable popularity among young people, which led to overcrowding and numerous space problems. Among the students were representatives of various nations living in Galicia.
