High school graduates in Podkarpackie Province, a Polish province along that shares a border with Ukraine and Slovakia, were studied. In order to collect the data, the poll method with quota sampling was used. In 2008, 936 high school graduates were tested; in 2009, 1,273 high school graduates were surveyed; and, in 2011, 925 high school graduates were tested. Th e pupils primarily took private English lessons (57% in 2008 and 61% in 2009). In 2011, the respondents most frequently took additional lessons in mathematics (80%). Th e primary motivation for taking private lessons was the desire to achieve the best results on the high school certifi cate and to increase the chances of obtaining entry to a renowned university. High school students most frequently benefi ted from lessons when they lived in cities with a higher socio-economic status and cultural capital. Th e pupils with a higher status took private lessons with the aim of maximizing their educational achievements. Th e youth with lower status rarely benefi ted from paid lessons, though private lessons could have helped augment this group’s defi cient knowledge.polUznanie autorstwa-Użycie niekomercyjne-Bez utworów zależnych 3.0 Polskahttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/pl/tutorschool graduatesborderlineeducational inequalityKOREPETYCJE MATURZYSTÓW POGRANICZA W LATACH 2008–2011KOREPETYCJE MATURZYSTÓW POGRANICZA W LATACH 2008–2011article
