W pierwszej części artykule przedstawiono zarys problematyki spójności terytorialnej w różnych kontekstach i różnych ujęciach. Następnie w zakresie dróg dojścia do tej spójności przedstawiono dwie hipotezy rozwojowe kraju, a to hipotezę polaryzacyjno-dyfuzyjną z uwzględnieniem konwergencji, interakcji, synergii oraz hipotezę rozwoju zrównoważonego i ich implikacje. Wskazano, że w przypadku regionów słabo rozwiniętych korzystniejsza jest hipoteza rozwoju zrównoważonego. W części końcowej przedstawiono dwa podejścia do problematyki metropolizacji kraju.

In the first part of the article there is presented the outline of problems of territorial coherence in different contexts and different formulations. Then on a scale of the way leading to this coherence there are introduced two developing hypotheses of a country, that is, a polarizing – diffusive hypothesis with regard to convergence, interaction and synergy as well as a hypothesis of well-balanced development and their implications. There is pointed that in case of weakly developed regions more profitable is the hypothesis of well – balanced development. In the final part there are presented two approaches to the problems of metropolisation of a country.
