Metafora od wieków uchodzi za serce poezji: nadaje wypowiedzi wyjątkowy kształt, wyciska niezatarte znamię na stylu, angażuje wyobraźnię i emocje czytelnika, a z poety czyni prawdziwego twórcę. Jest niezbędna w sztuce, ale nie sposób się bez niej obyć również w codziennych aktach myślenia, mówienia i pisania. Łącząc obraz z ideą, metafora pozwala wyrażać się w sposób oryginalny, a zarazem precyzyjny i dobitny. Dzięki temu bywa również atrakcyjnym środkiem wyrazu dla krytyki literackiej oraz poręcznym narzędziem refleksji o poezji. W dziejach literatury zdarzały się okresy, gdy te niezwykłe walory ujawniały się ze szczególną mocą. Jednym z nich jest romantyzm. Niniejsza monografia porusza zagadnienia z zakresu poetyki historycznej i historii krytyki literackiej. Jej celem jest zestawienie i analiza najważniejszych metafor, za których pomocą romantyczni krytycy literaccy konceptualizowali istotę poezji, czynności twórczych poety oraz samego dzieła poetyckiego. Analiza tych metafor pozwala na ukazanie romantycznej koncepcji poezji oraz jej związków z wielowiekową tradycją refleksji teoretycznoliterackiej. Materiał poddany analizie stanowią wypowiedzi kilkudziesięciu najważniejszych krytyków literackich doby romantyzmu w Polsce: teoretyczne rozprawy o poezji, artykuły o nurtach i gatunkach literackich oraz twórczości wybranych pisarzy, polemiki krytycznoliterackie, krótkie recenzje oraz szkice.

For centuries, metaphor has been regarded as an important component of poetry: it determines the general artistic effect, shapes the presented universe, models the writing style, stirs the imagination and engages the reader’s emotions, as well as it transforms the poet into a real creator. It is indispensable in art, but it is also omnipresent in everyday communication: in ordinary acts of speaking, writing, thinking and arguing. Metaphor allows one to express themselves precisely, clearly and, at the same time, in a graphic, interesting and original way. Therefore, it can be an attractive means of expression for literary criticism, as well as a useful tool for any reflection on poetry. In the history of literature, there were periods when this enormous potential of metaphor was particularly visible. One of such periods is Romanticism. The monograph addresses the issues related to the field of historical poetics and the history of literary criticism. Its aim is to compile and analyze the most important metaphors, by means of which the Polish Romantic literary critics conceptualized the essence of poetry, the writing process of the poet, and the poetic work itself. The analysis of these metaphors allows one to portray the Romantic concept of poetry and its relationship with the centuries-long tradition of theoretical and literary thought. The material analyzed is constituted by texts written by several dozen of the most significant literary critics of the Romantic period in Poland: theoretical treatises on poetry, articles about literary trends, genres and the works of selected writers, polemics in the field of literary criticism, short reviews and sketches.
