angielskim (max 1400 znaków) The following thesis consists of six chapters. The first four chapters provide a theoretical framework for empirical research included in the final two chapters. The theoretical part of the thesis analyses communication and language, examines the term meaning and presents techniques to convey meaning. The empirical part presents a corpus of German colloquial lexis excerpted from German television programmes. The corpus was the basis for preparation of a language test applied in a longitudinal study. The test examined the level of acquisition of German colloquial vocabulary by students of German at the beginning as well as after the first and the second term of study. The majority of words and expressions appearing in the test came from German language used every day. The choice of the people tested was intended. The two groups of students participating in the study were undergraduate and postgraduate students of German Philology at the University of Rzeszów. The application of the same test during three measurements enabled to capture changes in the colloquial vocabulary understood and used by the test persons and to draw conclusions going beyond the population tested.
