Pozycja Historyk literatury wśród gatunków mowy. Przypadek Stanisława Pigonia(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2022-12) Ziołowicz, AgnieszkaThe article concerns Stanisław Pigoń’s research on the ‘living word’ of Adam Mickiewicz. The subject of the reflection are two volumes of Mickiewicz’s “Complete Works”, published in 1933, including “Speeches” and “Conversations” of the poet. First of all, the method of scientific procedure used by Pigoń was mainly interpreted. This issue was placed in the context of his concept of the history of literature and of the twentieth-century research on the oral aspects of literature. Both volumes published by the scholar deserve to be recalled and appreciated, as they are the original Polish contribution to this area of scientific reflection. They also allow us to look at the culture of the Romantic era through the prism of forms and functions of orality and enrich our knowledge about the personality of Mickiewicz.Pozycja On the role of pauses – a qualitative and quantitative analysis of selected political speeches in the European Parliament(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2023-12) Semaník Miklóssiová, KarinThis paper presents an analysis of speech pauses occurring in selected political speeches, with a focus on both filled and silent types. The paper aims to highlight differences among pause categories in spoken language and assess potential gender differences. By analyzing speeches from male and female speakers in specific syntactic contexts, the paper reveals limited variations in fundamental frequency and pause duration. While certain subcategories exhibit slight differences in frequency, consistent patterns are lacking. Findings indicate that filled, hesitation, politeness, and perturbation pauses tend to be longer, whereas specification and personal stance pauses tend to have lower frequencies. Enumeration, opposition, and segmenting pauses strategically support a speaker's point, aligned with sentence structure. Investigating fundamental frequency trends before pauses demonstrates that a decrease in frequency signifies unit culmination, while an increase suggests non-final positions within units. The paper concludes that disparities exist among pause types, though differences between male and female speakers are generally minor. This emphasizes the need to consider multiple factors, including duration, frequency, and syntactic context, for comprehensive pause definitions. Overall, the paper provides insight into speech pause attributes, variations, and their significance in conveying meaning, thus enriching our understanding of speech patterns and communication strategies.Pozycja Ronald Reagan as a Public Speaker: In Search of the Aristotelian Rules of Rhetoric in Selected Addresses Delivered by the 40th US President(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2018) Giwojno, PawełThe main aim of this paper is to investigate the rhetorical style of Ronald Reagan (1911–2004), both as a President of the United States and as a public speaker. This study is focused on two elements, namely the range of rhetorical devices selected by President Reagan in his selected speeches, as well as a proposed explanation of the use of such devices in the context of a speaker–audience interaction. The latter part of this analysis is centered on the concept of the three persuasive appeals initially defined by Aristotle. In the first part of this paper the concept of the three persuasive appeals (the Aristotelian triangle) is presented and its particular elements explained. Directly afterwards, some theoretical frameworks for the use of linking devices are established. After the theoretical section, three selected Ronald Reagan speeches are analyzed. The focus is on the use of rhetorical devices in the given addresses. Finally, a research conclusion is included with an intention to identify the strategies and the style used by President Reagan in his interaction with the audience. This analysis may be of some help in order to understand how a speaker can powerfully influence listeners by using rhetorical tools.Pozycja Применение аудиоматериалов в процессе формирования и развития умений и навыков устной речи(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2019) Dźwierzyńska, EwaIn this article, there are presented rules of audial materials selection and possibilities of using them in the process of forming speaking language communication.
