Cult and Ritual in Polish Archaeology: Past Research and New Perspectives

This paper provides a brief overview of past and recent studies on the archaeology of cult and ritual in Poland. It discusses some of the most important publications and scholarly initiatives that have been shaping current approaches to various aspects of pre-Christian beliefs and it also attempts to predict future research trajectories.
Pożytki z teatru. Na przykładzie realizacji teatralnych Artura Żmijewskiego i Zorki Wollny

The article discusses using theatre in the practice of visual artists based on the cases of two artists. It presents different goals with which that medium has been used: in the staging of a Catholic Mass in theatre by Artur Żmijewski, and in playing the role of Ophelia by eleven actresses of different ages in a performance directed by Zorka Wollny. Considering the previous work of the two artists, one may say that theatre-related projects have been part of the interests and practice of both of them. They are both interested in working with people, yet the aim of Żmijewski’s experiment was affecting the audience and Wollny’s one – emancipation of the actresses and the text.
Ritual Roots of Memory (About Things)

The aim of this paper is a presentation of possible interpretations of the ritual of salutatio, as well as function and cultural connotations of ancestral funerary portraits (imagines) in ancient Rome. For this purpose, a number of research theories related to memory studies, hermeneutical analyses and performativity of things are discussed. In light of these theories it is possible to attempt an interpretation of salutatio and imagines as sources for constructing identity and memory of the Roman community.

Artykuł analizuje zmiany wizerunku cesarza Franciszka Józefa I na łamach lokalnej prasy lwowskiej. Za punkt odniesienia przyjęto wizyty Franciszka Józefa we Lwowie. Było ich pięć i pozwalają one prześledzić przemianę od monarchy absolutnego połowy XIX wieku do „naszego ojca” na początku XX wieku. W tekście ukazano jak postęp gospodarczy i technologiczny, liberalne reformy, emancypacja, rozwój projektów narodowych Ukraińców i Polaków, a także inne osiągnięcia drugiej połowy XIX wieku, wpłynęły na kształt osobistej historii cesarza, który nawet w czasach szerzenia się nacjonalizmu, uosabiał państwo i ojczyznę – ziemię, na której panują Habsburgowie.
