The paper concerns the problems connected with the translation from Russian into Polish of elements of religious terminology included in the novel by M. Bulgakov “The Master and Margarita”. We will concentrate on the terminology relating to the religious motif. The basic point under consideration is the description of various translation techniques aimed at the realization of strategies of adaptation or foreignization, which are used in the translation of religious terminology by I. Lewandowska and W. Dąbrowski in 1969, and by A. Drawicz in 1995. The conducted analysis has proved that in the first of the translations the authors conducted a clear adaptation of the fragments concerning the motif related to Gospels. This method underlines the universal character of parts of the novel. In contrast, the latter translation by A. Drawicz is a result of adopting by the translator of the foreignizing stance, and as a result the motif lost its metaphysical features.
