Boxing metaphors in political discourse: A quantitative corpus-based study

This paper utilizes the cognitive theory of metaphor and a corpus-based methodology to investigate the prevalent usage of metaphorical expressions derived from boxing terminology in the domain of politics. The objective is to identify and analyze the boxing metaphors that are commonly employed in political discourse. The findings of this study demonstrate the existence of boxing metaphors that exhibit strong or loose associations with the political domain. These metaphors possess distinct figurative meanings, originate from diverse metaphorical mappings, and serve multiple functions within the realm of political discourse.

Today the mass media plays a more and more important role as a source of information about different aspects of social life. Thus, it has become the main source of political knowledge as well. The more information citizens obtain from mass media, the bigger power the media has over its audience. Therefore, various players – journalists, publicists and politicians (using this feature of contemporary media) want to influence the state of social consciousness. One of the methods of such influence is the instrumental use of survey results in political and media discourses. In their article the authors describe different examples of these argumentations.
On the linguistic features of American political discourse

The present-day public communication space is dominated by the language of politics, thus allowing political discourse to both influence and become one of the components of contemporary culture. The paper aims at discussing the typical linguistic features of a sample of political speeches given by the major actors in American political campaigns in the year 2012. Attention will be given to the use of rhetorical devices, which serve as examples of both the figurative use of words and their constituent part of political language – used here as an instrument to increase power and to suggestively, and most frequently, subjectively, convey knowledge about the world. Though the typical linguistic features of political speeches have thus far been the focus of many linguists and researchers during their analysis of this phenomenon of discourse, not much attention has been given to establish a comparison of the rhetorical devices used by American politicians to win the hearts of a specific political party voter, i.e. a Democrat or a Republican.
