A sense of the meaning of life in women experiencing homelessness

Searching for the meaning of life is associated with a specific means of an individual’s existence in the world, which can determine axiological existence. A situation that almost forces one to ask questions about the meaning of life is a threat to the perspective of death and expe riences through human suffering. The aforementioned questions therefore appear, especially in the critical moments of human life, such as illness, disability, and homelessness. This article was written based on its own broader study, which was conducted in 2009 among 52 homeless women in Podkarpacie. The test subjects were selected in terms of age, place of residence during the conducted research, and their occasional or permanent residence in a shelter. The biographical method, and the narrative interview technique, a special form of free or in - depth interview, were used. In the article are the deliberations concerning the meaning of life in the perception of homeless women.

This article was written based on a larger, their own studies that were conducted in 2009 among the 52 homeless women in podkarpackie voivodship. People were matched in terms of age, place of residence during the research and occasional or permanent residence in the hostel. Using autobiographical narrative interview, which is a particular form of free or deep interview. The text attempts to show the opinion of homeless women on their own. It shows the reasons for homelessness women in their opinions and their own characteristics.

The problem of homelessness is not new, however it was only after 1989 that research regarding this issue started in Poland. Only very sparse publications connected with this subject matter appeared in preceding years. That situation was caused predominantly by the tendency to conceal the existence of certain social issues. The research related to this significant phenomenon conducted in the period of less than 20 years turned out to be extremely difficult, time and work consuming and very costly. A preliminary survey of the subject related literature showed that a research connected with family homelessness is undertaken very rarely. This phenomenon is a dangerous experience for an individual, but also the issue of family homelessness is becoming an alarming problem. Family's life is disturbed, which often leads to its disintegration. When a family faces homelessness, children are often placed in welfare institutions. Homelessness has negative impact on children's growth and education. Moreover it ruins physical and mental well being of the family members. In relation with the occurring problems, the herein article attempts an analysis of the issue of family homelessness. The analysis focused on the socio-demographic image of homeless families, causes of the problem, place of stay, ways for providing for the family, and forms of assistance for homeless families.

Homelessness among children and youth is a profoundly disturbing phenomenon, and its dimensions are difficult to diagnose unambiguously (GUS, 2012, 2013; MPiPS, 2013; Szczygieł, 2013, 2014a). Owing to the complexity of the factors determining the emergence of this phenomenon, its individual course in each case, and the diversity of the ways of getting out of it, in-depth research in this scope has to be conducted. It is also necessary to scrutinise the phenomenon from different viewpoints – the one of young people who experience this state, as well as the institutions dealing with the solution and prevention of this problem. The aim of this paper is to present the results of research on the phenomenon of homelessness among children and youth realised within the scope of the project Children Rough Sleepers (The Daphne III Programme) and to elaborate on the role which multi-institutional partnerships can fulfil in the area of social problems that are difficult to solve, using funds from the EU budget.
Cooperation for the Prevention of Homelesness Using Examples of Selected Countries of the European Union

Partnerships between the various institutions are important for a given entity in the process of engaging stakeholders. They lead to the solution of problems that affect all partners. In the context of partnership, individuals, groups and organisations representing different sectors agree to cooperate. Their aim is the fulfillment of their obligations or to undertake specific tasks, bringing their skills and resources together, incurring the risks and costs, and sharing the benefits resulting from the achievement of common partnership goals and the objectives of individual member organisations. Cross-sectoral partnership consists of representatives of the three sectors. These are usually large partnerships entered into with the aim of implementing national, regional, and even international projects, among others, in terms of social assistance. This article illustrates selected examples of actions taken on behalf of homeless individuals that are implemented by entities representing the various sectors, undertaking to cooperate and implement projects for the benefit of this social category.

Homelessness is the common phenomenon, not only in our country, but in other countries too. Due to the spreading scale, the most common analysis and research is done on the homeless men, rarely on women. There are seldom voices on the homeless single parents, or single families or homeless children. The existence of this problem needs the practical actions. In order to do this, there has been an idea of institutional support of the homeless families of the single parents appearing.

Problem bezdomności w Rzeszowie

Homelessness is a social problem occurring in individual countries, that is becoming more and more recognized, however complex and therefore difficult in the context of conducting scientific research, as well as undertaking initiatives in practice. Scientific publications on this topic had already appeared in Poland during the interwar period. In the Polish People’s Republic it was stressed that the problem was apparently solved by the caring role of the state. The effect of such a declaration was a blurred phenomenon in both popular as well as scientific consciousness. After 1989, homelessness revealed itself anew, resulting in a renewed interest for researchers, as well as creating solutions for practitioners in their efforts in the field of social assistance. Assistance activities are undertaken in Poland by many entities that can be grouped within the public, non-governmental and private sectors. The article presents conclusions from the studies on the phenomenon and scale of homelessness in the city of Rzeszow.
Przeciwdziałanie zjawisku bezdomności w Unii Europejskiej

Bezdomność jest zjawiskiem złożonym i wielowymiarowym. Najbardziej widoczną i ekstremalną formą ubóstwa i wykluczenia jest jej postać uliczna. Ten problem może również przejawiać się w innych formach, takich jak: przebywanie osób w placówkach, czasowe zamieszkiwanie u rodziny lub przyjaciół czy życie w warunkach nieodpowiednich i niebezpiecznych. Osobą bezdomną jest najczęściej samotny mężczyzna w średnim wieku, śpiący poza domem. Stereotyp ten nie odzwierciedla jednak zmieniającego się wizerunku bezdomnych, obserwuje się bowiem coraz większą liczbę młodych osób i kobiet. Studiując literaturę przedmiotu odnosi się wrażenie, że bezdomność jest przede wszystkim problemem mężczyzn, ponieważ ich odsetek jest większy niż kobiet czy dzieci.Szacuje się, że mieści się on wprzedziale 60–90%. Zdecydowanie mniej liczna jest populacja bezdomnych kobiet, od około 10% do 40%1 . Mając na względzie skalę zjawiska i jego specyfikę oraz fakt, że ta problematyka w kontekście profilaktyki w poszczególnych krajach jest różnie postrzegana i rozwiązywana, a ponadto nader rzadko poruszana w polskiej literaturze naukowej, w artykule skoncentrowano uwagę na zagadnieniu przeciwdziałania bezdomności w Unii Europejskiej (UE).

Strategie Unii Europejskiej wobec problemu bezdomności

Homelessness, considering the scale of the phenomenon, the complex reasons and the painful socio-economic effects of it, is a wide-spread and significant problem, which has specific regional and local conditioning. It seems right to implement various initiatives at the EU level, as well as to incorporate non-governmental organizations in the realization of programs in the field of social assistance. Despite numerous discussions, which are conducted in multi-national forums, as well as activities undertaken in individual countries, the homelessness problem still exists and can not be successfully resolved. Thus, in the present article a trial was undertaken to analyze select EU strategies aimed at implementing a concrete initiatives.
Wolontariusz- streetworker wobec problemów osób bezdomnych

Bezdomność jest jednym z trudniejszych do zbadania i rozwiązania problemów społecznych. Wspomniana trudność wynika z jednej strony z kosztowności badań, wiąże się z niebezpieczeństwem, na które naraża się badacz. Z drugiej strony kumulowanie się różnych przyczyn, złożoność sytuacji osoby bezdomnej powoduje, że nie zawsze korzysta ona z pomocy instytucji. W zasadzie ciągle część osób przebywa poza miejscami, tzw. mieszkalnymi. Działalność pomocowa wobec tych osób wymaga podejmowania długotrwałych, wieloaspektowych oddziaływań. W odniesieniu do osób wzbraniających się przed przebywaniem w placówce jest ona szczególnie skomplikowana. Okazuje się, że bardzo dobrym rozwiązaniem jest, stosunkowo mało jeszcze rozpowszechniona w Polsce, praca streetworkerów (pracowników etatowych, bądź wolontariuszy). W związku z powyższym niniejszy artykuł poświęcono zagadnieniu streetworkingu, który jest stosowany m.in. w pracy socjalnej z osobami bezdomnymi.

Scope and fast pace of implementation of some economic reforms caused appearance of many problems in Poland. Situation of this type was the reason for widening of poverty, worsening of people’s state of health and appearing of pathological behaviors. Weak resistance against difficult situations in life is, in turn, the cause for falling into the state of helplessness. People afflicted by homelessness become unable to manage by themselves, they lose their way in the surrouding reality. Thus, the issue of homelessness is of the extreme character (is the most tragic in its effects), and in consequence – of the pathological character. Education is extremely important in solving process of this social problem. It is possible to perceive two spaces where it is essential. The first one concerns the society education, that regards the individual who does not take active part in social life for the homeless one. The aim of education is to show problems of “the other one” and his/her social integration. The second educational space includes the prophylaxis and creates the possibility of social and professional reintegration of homeless people. The problem of education importance in the social and professional reintegration of homeless has been discussed in this article.
