Pozycja Bede the Venerable in Polish Religious Prose of the 16th –18th Centuries(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2020) Puchalska-Dąbrowska, Bernadetta M.The aim of the article is to introduce Bede the Venerable as a role model present in Polish religious prose of the 16th–18th centuries. The sources under discussion are mainly collections of the lives of saints. The profile of Bede, shown as a perfect Benedictine monk, scholar and priest, is inspired by the earliest biographical Anglo-Saxon sources (e.g. Bede’s autobiography and Cuthbert’s letter concerning his death). Polish hagiography, following the directions of the Trent Council, aims at emphasising Bede’s qualities required from the clergy at that time – in-depth spiritual life, thorough knowledge, respect towards authorities, and teaching skills.Pozycja Koncept w kazaniu okolicznościowym Pszczółka w bursztynie Franciszka Sitańskiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Kaczor-Scheitler, KatarzynaThe article presents the conceit in the Polish baroque sermon "Pszczółka w bursztynie" ["A Bee in Amber"] of a Bernardine Franciszek Sitański. In the sermon the author presents the figure of St. Dorothy; he also draws attention to the virtues of Dorota Kątska, who was the abbess of St. Norbert’s Order in Zwierzyniec (near Cracow) in the 17th century, and most of all he praises the monastic way of life. Biblical and hagiographic arguments, a source of inspiration for the author as an effective means of persuasion, appeal to the imagination of the audience. Metaphors, analogies and comparisons in the sermon prove that "Pszczółka w bursztynie" is based upon the conceit. By using the arguments Sitański was trying not only to move the recipients, but mainly to persuade them to cultivate virtues presented by Christian heroines.Pozycja Męczeństwo siedmiu braci machabejskich i ich matki wobec chrześcijańskiej tradycji hagiograficznej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2016) Rusnak, RadosławThe article focuses upon the description of the massacre of seven Maccabean brothers and their mother, from the seventh chapter of the Second Book of the Maccabees, as one of the most important representational patterns for the chronologically later Christian hagiographic literature, and also outlines theological foundations, developed by the Fathers of the Church, for the inclusion of the heroes of the Jewish uprising from the second century B.C. in the category of martyrdom characteristic of Christianity. In the part devoted to the Old Polish reception of this theme, special attention is devoted to a separate literary rendition of the story, which is the only one of its kind, in "A Pathetic Story of one Mother" by Samuel Dowgird of Pogowie. A detailed analysis focuses on both placing this adaptation within the entire translation work of the Lithuanian author and the idea of its interpretation. The paper is complemented by a critical edition of Dowgird’s work.Pozycja Patientia et misericordia, poena et signum. The picture of a diseased person and the disease in Mediaeval narrative sources(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2020) Chmielewska, KatarzynaThe article presents the manner of showing disease and the suffering of a person by Mediaeval narrative sources. The basis for the article are various national chronicles, monastic historiography and hagiography written in the Middle Ages. The analysed works are the lives of Saint Kinga of Poland, Anne of Bohemia, Salomea of Poland and Saint Francis of Assisi, three monastic chronicles written by canons regulars in the monasteries in Kłodzko, Żagań and Wrocław, and chronicles describing the Polish history by Gallus Anonymous, Jan Długosz and Jan of Czarnków. The author describes the attitude of the society towards the ill person and the attitude of the ill towards their suffering. The article presents also the description of disease and the attempt (or the lack of attempt) to provide medical causes of the illnesses. The indication of pathogenesis of the disease is very rare in the medieval narrative sources. The authors of these works often appeal to God in this matter, they look for an explanation in the Lord’s wrath or divine providence. The author of the article shows the differences in presenting the disease in the sources given in the article depending on the kind of works and its purposes.Pozycja Piersi w świętości…(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2017) Regiewicz, AdamThe analysis of medieval hagiographic stories bring an interesting reflection on the role and significance of female breasts in faith transmission. Their presence in cultural transmission, despite common conviction about absence of erotic motives in the culture of the Middle Ages is quite widespread. It is strongly connected with biblical tradition in which the breasts become a symbol of motherhood and at the same time of youth and joy expressed by wine. Simultaneously in early Christian tradition female breasts become the mark of martyrdom. Sebastiana Nuceryna(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2023-12) Frąkała, KlaraArtykuł koncentruje się na analizie pierwszego polskiego przekładu żywota św. Teresy z Ávila pióra hiszpańskiego jezuity – Francisca de Ribery. Translację tę sporządził na początku XVII wieku krakowski kaznodzieja ks. Sebastian Nuceryn. To interesujące i niebadane dotychczas w literaturze przedmiotu tłumaczenie jest zarówno pierwszym w Polsce świadectwem kultu św. Teresy, jak i narzędziem transmisji nowych, a dla wielu kontrowersyjnych idei religijnych. Artykuł przedstawia sylwetki zarówno autora oryginału, jak i tłumacza, a także opisuje okoliczności sporządzenia przekładu. Za pomocą analizy porównawczej trzech wersji językowych tekstu – hiszpańskiej (oryginalnej), włoskiej (która była podstawą translacji Nuceryna) oraz polskiej – autorka omawia podjętą przez tłumacza próbę zmierzenia się z dyskursem mistycznym oraz ukazania nowego modelu świętości, reprezentowanego przez wówczas mało jeszcze znaną w Rzeczypospolitej postać św. Teresy. Niniejsze studium częściowo uzupełnia lukę w badaniach historycznoliterackich, w których brakuje jakichkolwiek prac analitycznych poświęconych twórczości Nuceryna, promotora karmelitańskiego mistycyzmu w Rzeczypospolitej Wazów.
