Translation as a Cultural Transfer: Rendering of Tourist Texts Promoting Podkarpacie Province

The primary objective of the dissertation was to evaluate the translations of culture-specific elements in tourist texts promoting the Podkarpacie Province. Culture-specific elements extracted from the parallel corpus were divided into three categories: geography, society and culture, and their translations were assessed as satisfactory, acceptable, or unsatisfactory renderings. In the course of the analysis, it was revealed that the unsatisfactory translations (66.29%) prevailed over satisfactory and acceptable renderings (33.71%). Another difficulty concerning the translation of culture-specific elements in tourist texts promoting the Podkarpacie Province was the lack of consistency in selecting the equivalent for a given term. This inconsistency related not only to one text, but it also concerned texts published by the same institution. The highest level of consistency of equivalents was maintained in the category of culture whereas the lowest concerned the class of geography. The detailed examination of the equivalents for selected culture-specific elements demonstrated that there are, in fact, various factors that have an influence on the quality of translating culture-specific elements in tourist texts promoting the Podkarpacie Province. It was evidenced that the success of the translation of culture-specific elements in the discussed texts is not solely dependent on the translator’s knowledge about the source and target cultures.
