Boxing metaphors in political discourse: A quantitative corpus-based study

This paper utilizes the cognitive theory of metaphor and a corpus-based methodology to investigate the prevalent usage of metaphorical expressions derived from boxing terminology in the domain of politics. The objective is to identify and analyze the boxing metaphors that are commonly employed in political discourse. The findings of this study demonstrate the existence of boxing metaphors that exhibit strong or loose associations with the political domain. These metaphors possess distinct figurative meanings, originate from diverse metaphorical mappings, and serve multiple functions within the realm of political discourse.
Metaphoconstructions: combining metaphors and construction

This article demonstrates a corpus-based approach to the investigation of metaphorical constructions by combining key insights from Conceptual Theory of Metaphor (Kӧvecses 2002), Blending (Fauconnier and Turner 2002) and Construction Grammar (Goldberg 2006, Croft 2001). This approach rests on the retrieval of lexical units from the target domain and the identification of the metaphorical expressions associated with them. The author proposes to encode the conventionalized uses of symbolic units in terms of metaphorical constructions: that is, metaphoconstructions. It is argued that the meanings of individual metaphoconstructions not only reside in a set of correspondences between the two domains, but also depend on conceptual integration in a given situation of use. A corpus-based method presented in this article differs from the introspective method in that it allows us to extract metaphorical constructions more exhaustively and to quantify their frequency.
One-word Interjections as Discourse Markers in Female and Male Speakers’ Academic Talk: A Case Study Based on the Michigan Corpus of Academic English

Through a corpus-based search, the present paper’s objective is to attempt to reveal the differentiation of some interjections as discourse markers in the academic talks presented by speakers of both genders. By doing so, I offer a deepened insight into why female and male speakers resort to the use of these interjections. On the basis of an online corpus of the University of Michigan, I present my findings according to several other criteria. The corpus is compiled of a huge set of academic talks by students and staff of the university. Finally, using Jakobson’s functions, I classify and further analyse these discourse markers. The data attained through searching this corpus take me a step further in casting some light on the ratio of the interjections used by the two genders, and the possible reasons for the uneven distribution of interjections in terms of female and male use.
