Dawne piśmiennictwo religijne - inspirujące i nadal odkrywane dziedzictwo

The present issue of our journal is devoted to Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature as well as themes and conventions of religious literature. The articles show a rich tradition of such works. The broad scope of topics demonstrates diverse literary research. The articles are devoted to defining such terms as "religious literature" and "religious poet", as well as to translations and biblical inspirations, prayers and meditations, monastic authors and their works, hymnals, sermons and the rhetoric, the matter of faith and reason, and a Sarmatian religion. The present issue of "Tematy i Konteksty" ("Themes and Contexts") also includes the papers devoted to interpretation of 19th century literature, reviews, reports and announcements. The authors of studies are scholars from a range of academic institutions in Poland.
Fortune-telling Predictions in the Light of Faith and Reason. Religious Aspects of „Informacya matematyczna” by Wojciech Bystrzonowski

This article is focused on the criticism of the prophecies presented by Wojciech Bystrzonowski, an encyclopaedist and populariser of science, in his work „Informacya matematyczna” [Mathematical Information] (1743, 1749). The author discusses prophecies of sorcerers, physiognomy, palmistry, prophetic dreams and astrological predictions. He examines the cases of magical practices combined with religious beliefs, which he regards as dangerous manifestations of superstition. He also demonstrates that fortune-telling cannot be compatible with faith or the fundamental principles of rational reasoning. Furthermore, he emphasizes that for a critical evaluation of such predictions, the Jesuit rules for the discernment of spirits can be applied. The issues addressed in Bystrzonowski’s work are characteristic of the atmosphere of the intellectual change that took place in late Baroque and early Enlightenment.
Ludzkie pragnienia, trudy i obawy w oświeceniowych modlitwach poetyckich

The paper is devoted to poetic prayer songs of the Enlightenment, which contain references to the work and the wider circle of relationships as well as values and feelings of the individual. The considerations are focused on the analysis undertaken by the authors who concentrate on the social changes taking place in the late eighteenth century. The basic research tasks include, among other things, describing the role of poetic prayers in complex human relationships in the context of communication theory as well as genre characteristics. The main aim of the paper is to introduce the meaning and the understanding of prayer as an important part of human life that is placed in the contemporary everyday social rhythm.
O „Rękopisie znalezionym w Saragossie” w perspektywie intertekstualnej raz jeszcze

The monograph of Maria Janoszka, entitled “The Manuscript Found in Saragossa by Jan Potocki and selected novels from the 20th century (Fowles- -Rosendorfer-Gretkowska)” is the first attempt to tackle the problem suggested by the title. Janoszka tries to show the unusual modernity of Potocki’s masterpiece. She researches the intertextual relations between “The Manuscrip”t and three 20th-century novels (“The Magus”, “The Architect of Ruins”, “Rękopis nieodnaleziony, czyli zalety szubienic”). The author focuses on the composition of works, genre and literary conventions. She also analyze the construction of the protagonist and novel spaces. The book is well documented and it has been written in an interesting way, making the monograph an incentive to continue research on Potocki’s masterpiece, which is a pioneering and still inspiring novel.
Obcość, wyobcowanie i inność prototypowych aktorów społecznych w literaturze stanisławowskiej

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest prześledzenie w różnych kontekstach życia narodowego problematyki obcości, wyobcowania i inności szeregu aktorów społecznych pojawiających się w literaturze stanisławowskiej. Punkt ciężkości rozważań położony został na prototypowe postacie i utwory, które obrazują główne dylematy ideowe epoki polskiego oświecenia, związane z konfrontacją sarmatyzmu z cywilizacją zachodnioeuropejską. W artykule ujęto zarówno konserwatywne, jak i nowe tendencje kulturowe, wyznaczane przez postawy obyczajowe i polityczne mniej lub bardziej znaczących typów i indywidualności społecznych charakterystycznych dla literatury stanisławowskiej.

The subject of the report is the jubilee of the 25th anniversary of the Department of Old Polish Literature and the Literature of Polish Enlightenment at the University of Rzeszow. The celebration took place on 14th December 2016. It gathered the authorities of the Rzeszow University, the Institute of Polish Philology, the employees of the Department and numerous guests from other scientific units of the Faculty. During the meeting occasional publication entitled „Staropolskie i oświeceniowe tematy i preteksty” (Old-Polish and Enlightenment topics and pretexts). It is filled with the present employees’ of the Department works and the jubilee presentation of its output and the output of people constituting the Department in the past and at present. An occasional lecture was delivered by Professor Jerzy Jarzębski.
"Poezja okolicznościowa w Polsce w latach 1730-1830" – zwycięska publikacja Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego

The article presents a longer news note on awarding the Rzeszow University Publishing House the Grand Prize of the Rector of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań for the best university book during the 18th Poznań (not just Science) Book Days, which took place in November 2014. The Publishing House received it for a monograph in the history of literature specified in its title. The note presents the most important stages of editorial and publishing work on the awarded book and briefly describes its scholarly value.
Polacy w Baden na przełomie XVIII i XIX wieku w świetle wybranych austriackich źródeł archiwalnych

Artykuł stanowi podsumowanie kwerendy przeprowadzonej w 2020 r. w archiwach Wiednia i Baden. Jej przedmiotem byli Polacy przyjeżdżający do Baden na przełomie XVIII i XIX w. Objęła ona: Stadtarchiv Baden, Österreichisches Staatsarchiv (Wiedeń), archiwum Urzędu Miasta Wiednia, Diözesanarchiv Wien, a także materiały dostępne na łamach „Wiener Zeitung”. Ustalono ponad 400 nazwisk polskich podróżników do Baden. Kwerenda dowiodła, że na przełomie XVIII i XIX w. status społeczny polskich turystów odzwierciedlał m.in. demokratyzowanie się fenomenu podróży „do wód”.

He also shows that prophecy cannot be compatible with faith and fundamental principles of rational reasoning. Furthermore, he emphasizes that in the critical evaluation of prophecy a Jesuit principle of discernment of spirits can be applied. The issues covered in his work are characteristic of the atmosphere of the intellectual change that took place at the turn of the Baroque and the Enlightenment.
Przejawy sarmackiej religijności w relacjach cudzoziemców odwiedzających Rzeczpospolitą w XVIII wieku

The main purpouse of this article is to elaborate how the foreigners who visited Poland during the 18th century described the religious life of the Polish nobility. The author analyses travel journals written by Johann Joseph Kausch, Johann Erich Biester, Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, William Coxe, Nathaniel William Wraxall, Joseph Marshall and James Harris. It is shown that the foreigners accused Polish nobles of bigotry and superficial religiousness. Moreover, they criticised the theatralisation of the Christian liturgy in Poland, although after the Council of Trident it was a common phenomenon in Europe. It is also proven that the foreigners demonstrated their indifferent attitude towards the idea of Poland as "antemurale christianitatis" and blamed the members of the Bar Confederation for cruelty and religious fanaticism. In conclusion, it is said that the foreigners created a false, simplified description of Sarmatian religiousness. The main reason of that was their general lack of understanding of Polish culture and mentality.
Recepcja mitologii słowiańskiej w literaturze polskiego oświecenia

W dysertacji pt. „Recepcja mitologii słowiańskiej w literaturze polskiego oświecenia” prześledzony został materiał mitologiczny w twórczości przełomu wieków XVIII i XIX z uwzględnieniem przyjętych metodologii badań: narratywizmu, sztuki interpretacji oraz krytyki mitograficznej. Na podstawie tego rozróżnienia dokonano analizy recepcji mitologii słowiańskiej w literaturze polskiego oświecenia. Pod uwagę zostały wzięte teksty z trzech etapów epoki rozumu: czasów saskich, stanisławowskich i porozbiorowych. Rozpowszechniona periodyzacja została jednak nieco rozszerzona ze względu na procesowy charakter omawianego zjawiska. Dokonało się ono na gruncie wielu dziesięcioleci i określane być może mianem słowiańskiego przełomu. Przeprowadzone badania wpisują się w coraz popularniejszy nurt rozważań nad piśmiennictwem wieku świateł akcentujący pozaracjonalne inspiracje. Należy jednak podkreślić, iż obecność wątków mitologii słowiańskiej w literaturze przełomu wieków XVIII i XIX stanowi wynik dociekań antropologicznych oraz naukowej wiedzy o społecznościach przedchrześcijańskich.
Swojskość i uniwersalizm – z wybranych zagadnień staropolskiego i oświeceniowego piśmiennictwa religijnego

Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature is a fascinating area of research in past culture. It is still too early to claim comprehensive knowledge of it even though systematic work has been in progress for decades. The present issue of “Tematy i Konteksty” is the second collection of papers focused upon this current in old Polish literature. This issue is devoted to the relations of familiarity and universalism in Old Polish and Enlightenment religious literature. The main emphasis in the papers has been placed upon the Brest Bible and biblical inspirations, homiletics and occasional literature, religious drama, religious confession, mysticism, meditation, religious prints and manuscripts.
„Szlachetna namiętność” – tematyka orientalna w twórczości Jana Potockiego

Tematem rozprawy jest „szlachetna namiętność” Jana Potockiego, czyli – jak sam wyjaśniał – jego zainte-resowania Orientem. Owa pasja towarzyszyła hrabiemu przez całe życie. Była także istotnym elementem twór-czości literackiej oraz naukowej krajczyca. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie sposobów, za pomocą których hrabia zdobywał wiedzę na temat Wschodu. Oglądowi podda-no intelektualne oraz rzeczywiste wędrówki do Orientu autora Rękopisu znalezionego w Saragossie. Następnie poprzez analizę kulturową tekstów Potockiego pokazano efekty transpozycji tego niezwykle bogatego doświad-czenia w literaturę. Zdumiewająca wręcz polimorficz-ność dzieła hrabiego wymagała zastosowania rozmaitych narzędzi badawczych. Ze względu na specyfikę twór-czości orientalizującej, sięgnięto po instrumenty wypra-cowane w obrębie antropologii literatury, imagologii oraz komparatystyki. W dysertacji chciano udowodnić, iż wschodnie fascynacje Jana Potockiego były wyrazem szczerych, a nie jedynie wywołanych modą, zaintereso-wań. Jednocześnie interpretować je należy również jako świadectwo zmian dokonujących się w świadomości europejskiej (w tym również polskiej) w epoce Oświece-nia, pod wpływem kontaktów z kulturami pozaeuropej-skimi. Swoją postawą oraz twórczością literacką i nau-kową hrabia z pewnością miał w tych zmianach ważny udział.
Utwory religijne Konstancji Benisławskiej a tradycja mistyki hiszpańskiej (św. Teresa z Ávili, św. Jan od Krzyża)

Konstancja Benisławska was the author of only one collection, entitled "Pieśni sobie śpiewane" ["Songs Sung to Oneself, by Konstancja von Ryck Benisławska, wife of the pantler of the Duchy of Livonia, published with encouragement from friends and taken from rural shadow into daylight in Vilnus in 1776"]. It was published in a special period for the Republic of Poland when ideologies from Western Europe became popular in our country. Under the influence of views of French encyclopaedists and Voltaire, efforts for a thorough reform of political, social and cultural institutions began to be made. Transformations were the major talking point in press and literature of those days. Some social circles i.e. representatives of aristocracy, rich nobility and even clergy, started to become interested in the new laic model of spiritual life proposed by Western thinkers. According to philosophers, the Catholic Church proclaimed outdated ideas and stood in the way of development and civilization. Despite the applause for anti-Catholic ideas, the role and teachings of the Catholic Church in the Republic of Poland were not questioned. It contributed to a free development of religious literature. The volume of Benisławska, who was shaped in the spirit of great Spanish mystics, was inspired by love towards God. That feeling mobilizes the poet to continuous search for contact with the Creator, entering into deeper relations. The volume, which is a sort of “poetic prayer book,” is an account of her spiritual experience and feelings.
