The Publishing House received it for a monograph in the history of literature specified in its title. The note presents the most important stages of editorial and publishing work on the awarded book and briefly describes its scholarly value.Pozycja Średniowieczne podłoże kultury pogranicza(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Timofiejew, ArturThe international conference “Rozmyślanie przemyskie [The Przemyśl Meditation] as Evidence of Medieval Literary and Religious Culture in View of Ages” (Przemyśl-Krasiczyn, 12th–14th of June, 2014) aimed at reconsidering medieval roots of West- and East-Slavonic culture-borderland. Participants of the conference represented research centres from Poland, Ukraine and Russia. Text of "Rozmyślanie przemyskie", genesis and transfiguration of apocryphal motifs of its narrative and influence of that literary and preaching work on Slavonic folklore were the three main objects of reflexion. The lecturers stressed two matters especially: textual multi-layer complexity of "Rozmyślanie przemyskie" and persistence of Christ’s childhood motifs in Slavonic oral folklore. The conference was organized by the State East-European College in Przemyśl, the University of Rzeszów, the Maria Skłodowska-Curie University in Lublin, and the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (Ukraine).Pozycja Z żałobnej karty. Wspomnienie o Profesorze Józefie Nowakowskim(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Uliasz, StanisławThe text is a tribute to Professor Józef Nowakowski, who died in 2014. He was a long-time scholar in the Institute of Polish Philology at the Pedagogical University in Rzeszów, researcher into 20th century poetry, popular literature, the noble traditions in Polish culture as well as the history of the Home Army in the region of Strzyżów.Pozycja Xanadu - kraina hiperobfitości(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Korwin-Piotrowska, DorotaThe review is of a book by Mariusz Pisarski, “Xanadu. Hipertekstowe przemiany prozy” [„Xanadu. Hipertext Changes in Fiction”], first published in 2013. On the one hand, the reviewer appreciates the author’s attempt at a comprehensive presentation of all aspects of hypertext fiction (structure of lexis, hyperlink features, connection models, differences in structure) and its relations with avant-garde literary tradition, theory of literature and text studies, on the other hand she provides some critical remarks concerning numerous mistakes, omissions and inconsistencies. Pisarski’s book presents a wealth of topics and references, provides a summary of existing research positions, but is too cautious in marking out new paths.Pozycja Nauka w relacji Pigonia i jego korespondentów(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Maślanka, JulianThe article describes in detail the book by Czesław Kłak, “Pigoń” (the Rzeszów University Publishing House, Rzeszów 2013, 612 pp.). The book is a rarity in the Polish humanities because it presents not only the profile of Stanisław Pigoń (1885-1968), one of the most renowned historians of Polish literature, but also a history of Polish literature studies over the course of about 60 years of the 20th century. The main part of the book is based on the correspondence between Pigoń and other scholars and eminent personages of the time: Roman Pollak, Julian Krzyżanowski, Tadeusz Mikulski, Czesław Zgorzelski, Maria Danilewiczowa as well as Bishops Ignacy Świrski and Czesław Falkowski. The book also contains a discussion of Pigoń’s diaries and memoirs, and the Appendix with two polemic articles in defence of Pigoń against imaginary charges of anti-Semitism.Pozycja Na marginesie edycji Baldego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Pieczyński, MaciejTwo early modern Polish translations of “Poema de vanitate mundi” by Jakob Balde edited by Maria Kozłowska is an important publication from the perspective of research into Baroque religious poetry, especially the Saxon times. The popularity of Balde’s poem in late Baroque can be seen not only in its subsequent editions, but also in the references to it in the works of the contemporary religious poets, including Dominik Rudnicki and Karol Mikołaj Juniewicz. In the introduction to this edition the author presents Balde as a Jesuit poet, who subordinates his writing to didactic and moralistic objectives, but at the same time strives to engage the reader’s senses, following the principles of Ignatian meditation.Pozycja The Male Gaze and Beyond: Edgar Allan Poe’s Female Characters(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Niedziela, Barbara; Kleparski, Grzegorz A.Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie motywu śmierci w twórczości Edgara Allana Poe, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem trzech opowiadań: "Morella", "Berenika" i "Portret owalny". Pozycja Interpretacja projekcyjna. Prusowska lektura "Zdań i uwag" Adama Mickiewicza(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Ławski, JarosławThe article focuses on the interpretation of selected aphorisms of the Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz (1798–1855) made by Bolesław Prus (1847–1912), a prose writer and representative of realism in Polish post-Romantic literature. Prus interpreted religious, sometimes almost mystical, aphorisms as commendation of hard work, activism, and as a manifesto of practical ethics. Inspired by the mystical thoughts of Angelus Silesius, Jacob Boehme and Saint-Martin, Mickiewicz’s aphorisms are perceived as exceptionally ambiguous. Prus, however, projected his own literary and philosophical mindset onto the micro-texts of the Romantic poet, and as a consequence oversimplified their meaning. What he did is here called a projecting interpretation.Pozycja Olimp i Polska. Religia w "Stefanie Czarnieckim" Kajetana Koźmiana(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Zabielski, ŁukaszKajetan Koźmian (1771-1856) is a representative of the 19th century classicism called post-partition or Warsaw classicism. Similarly to other Polish and European poets, he made an attempt to create a national epic. His work titled "Stefan Czarniecki" is considered to be the first national epic. It was published in 1858 in Poznań. This monumental poem has 500 pages and almost 13 thousand verses. This ambitious classic writer from Piotrowice aspired to become a national poet. He desired to follow two masters of literature, namely Virgil and Horace. Frankly, I think that Koźmian failed. He could not write a national epic and remain faithful to his ancient idols at the same time. This article analyses the reasons for this fiasco. Generally, they are the antinomies between Christian beliefs on the one hand, and Greek and Roman mythologies on the other.Pozycja Przejawy sarmackiej religijności w relacjach cudzoziemców odwiedzających Rzeczpospolitą w XVIII wieku(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Piotrowiak, DariuszThe main purpouse of this article is to elaborate how the foreigners who visited Poland during the 18th century described the religious life of the Polish nobility. The author analyses travel journals written by Johann Joseph Kausch, Johann Erich Biester, Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, William Coxe, Nathaniel William Wraxall, Joseph Marshall and James Harris. It is shown that the foreigners accused Polish nobles of bigotry and superficial religiousness. Moreover, they criticised the theatralisation of the Christian liturgy in Poland, although after the Council of Trident it was a common phenomenon in Europe. It is also proven that the foreigners demonstrated their indifferent attitude towards the idea of Poland as "antemurale christianitatis" and blamed the members of the Bar Confederation for cruelty and religious fanaticism. In conclusion, it is said that the foreigners created a false, simplified description of Sarmatian religiousness. The main reason of that was their general lack of understanding of Polish culture and mentality.Pozycja Powstawanie lokalnych kultów maryjnych i świętych patronów na Rusi Czerwonej po najazdach tatarskich jako dyskurs religijny w Rzeczypospolitej epoki nowożytnej(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Gliwa, AndrzejFrom the late Middle Ages to the end of the 17th century the collective memory of the population in the south-eastern territories of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was shaped by the traumatic events associated with the Tatar invasions. An important part of that collective memory in this part of the Polish-Lithuanian state was religious discourse characterized by “the long term”, which was closely intertwined with the contemporary philosophy of history and the idea of providentialism. Durability and stability of this discourse in the historical and social perspective was a consequence of the cultural and religious alienation of the Tatars among the settled Christian communities and their of use of asymmetric warfare. Religious discourse manifested itself on the one hand in the rapidly growing Marian devotion, which resulted from the belief in the care of the Virgin Mary becoming over time more and more common in social consciousness, and on the other hand in the emergence of the cults of patron saints whose intercession was supposed to lead to supernatural interventions in defence of the faithful. In this way, religious discourse fulfilled a very important social role by strengthening psychological adaptation mechanisms, which played a key role in the communities affected by violence, mass terror and fear.Pozycja Obrazy biczowania Chrystusa w wybranych mesjadach pasyjnych z XVII wieku(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Drożdżewicz, MonikaMy paper addresses the ways of presenting the Passion of Christ in the 17th century Polish passion messiads. Concentrating on the images of the flagellation of Christ in the narrative poems of Kasper Miaskowski, Abraham Rożniatowski, Wacław Potocki and Wespazjan Kochowski, I analyze the relation of the motifs used by them to the exegetic, the mystic, and the apocryphal traditions. Respectful of their original context, my interpretation of the fragments is supported by a thorough analysis of their structure and use of rhetoric devices. My research allows me to conclude that in order to approach the mysteries of faith, the authors of the messiads used symbolic language as a living faith tradition.Pozycja Prognostyki w świetle wiary i rozumu. Z religijnych aspektów "Informacyi matematycznej" Wojciecha Bystrzonowskiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Raubo, GrzegorzThe article is devoted to criticism of prophecies presented by Wojciech Bystrzonowski, an encyclopaedist and a science popularizer, in his work “Informacyja matematyczna” [“Mathematical Information”] (1743, 1749). The author discusses prophecies of sorcerers, physiognomy, palmistry, prophetic dreams and astrological predictions. He examines the cases of combining magical practices with religious beliefs, which he regards as dangerous signs of spreading superstitions. He also shows that prophecy cannot be compatible with faith and fundamental principles of rational reasoning. Furthermore, he emphasizes that in the critical evaluation of prophecy a Jesuit principle of discernment of spirits can be applied. The issues covered in his work are characteristic of the atmosphere of the intellectual change that took place at the turn of the Baroque and the Enlightenment.Pozycja Postać Bedy Czcigodnego w polskim piśmiennictwie religijnym XVI–XVIII wieku(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Puchalska-Dąbrowska, Bernadetta M.The aim of the article is to present Bede the Venerable as a role model present in the Polish religious prose of the 16th-18th centuries. The sources under discussion are mainly collections of the lives of saints. The profile of Bede, shown as a perfect Benedictine monk, scholar and priest is inspired by the earliest biographical Anglo-Saxon sources (e.g. Bede’s autobiography and Cuthbert’s letter on the hero’s death). Polish hagiography, following the directions of the Trent Council, aims at emphasizing Bede’s qualities required from the then clergy – in-depth spiritual life, thorough knowledge, respect towards authorities, and teaching skills.Pozycja Uczony i święty. Chrystianizacja wizerunków mędrców dawnych w "Żywotach filozofów" Marcina Bielskiego(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Lasocińska, EsteraThe article focuses upon the relation between the realities of faith and reason. The author presents the image of a Christian Stoic, which is typical of Renaissance literature, and goes on to analyze “Żywoty filozofów” [“Lives of the Philosophers”] by Marcin Bielski to describe the structure and specific features of this kind of book on the history of philosophy at the beginning of the 16th century. Referring to medieval tradition (John of Wales, Walter Burleigh), the article shows how the Polish author used it to create the model of a pious sage, distinguished by his love of intellectual, moral and evangelical virtues. The article also refers to two later works, “Wizerunek własny” [“The True Image of the Life of the Honest Man”] by Mikołaj Rej (1558) and “Dyjalog mięsopustny” [“The Dialogue for the Last Days before the Lent”] (c. 1622), which document the continuity of the medieval tradtion of depicting a Christian philosopher.Pozycja Miejsce elogium w wybranych ukraińskich traktatach retorycznych z końca XVII i z pierwszej połowy XVIII wieku(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, 2014) Cyganok, OlgaThe article gives evidence that elogium existed in the Old Ukrainian literature on the theory level (it has been discussed in at least fourteen handwritten Ukrainian textbooks of rhetoric from the late 17th and of the first half of the 18th centuries). They were mostly a reflection on elogium as a Baroque literary genre, sometimes elogium’s short and witty style (stylus elogiaris) was described. Elogia, historical and panegyric, existed both in the written and oral forms. Two senses of that term are sometimes indicated. Elogium in a broad sense meant praise or encomium, and in the narrow sense it was close to the Jesuit model of the genre. The examples given in textbooks, usually religious elogia, or texts offered to outstanding figures in ancient or modern times, refer (taking into account literary polemic with the Jesuits) to the ancient elogium or they are written following the pattern of the Jesuit elogium.
