    Review: Piotr Odmieniec Włast (Marya Komornicka), „Xięga poezji idyllicznej. Rzeczy Francuskie” (“Book of idyllic poetry. French things”), ed. Barbara Steligowska, transl. Joanna Majewska, Warsaw 2011, pp. 150. The review takes a closer look at the edition of poems left by Piotr Odmieniec Włast or Maria Komornicka edited by Barbara Stelingowska in Warsaw in 2011. “Xięga poezji idyllicznej. Rzeczy francuskie” („Book of idyllic poetry. French things”) collects texts in a foreign language along with translations done by Joanna Majewska. The review contains a short biographical outline of the poet revealing her dramatic life before nervous breakdown and after it. Moreover, it reviews the up-to-now editions of the texts included in the manuscript of “Xięga poezji idyllicznej” and presents the researchers who in the last years studied the life and output of Maria Komornicka. It also shows the edition of the poems on the basis of afterword and translator’s remarks inscribing the publication in the current of studies done from the perspective of feminist and cultural philosophy.

    Konopnicka w kręgu rodzinnym

    Review: Maria Konopnicka, "Listy do synów i córek" ("Letters to sons and daughters"), edited and prefaced by Lena Magnone, Warsaw – Institute of Literary Studies at Polish Academy of Sciences; Żarnowiec – Maria Konopnicka Museum, Warsaw 2010, pp. 956. The author presents the history of Maria Konopnicka’s correspondence as well as the history of editing this part of the writer’s output. He shows the content of the reviewed volume including letters to the poet’s children and discusses its structure and editorial principles. The reviewer finds specific features of Konopnicka’s correspondence considering it on the background of epistolography of other writers. The letters of the most popular poet of the second half of the 19th century have their own specificity; seemingly without emotions they hide crucial information about the inner life of their authoress. They are also an irreplaceable source of knowledge of the history of her writing.

    Krasiński i Mickiewicz – jedna epoka, dwa przeciwne światy

    Review: Jerzy Fiećko, „Krasiński przeciw Mickiewiczowi. Najważniejszy spór romantyków” („Krasiński against Mickiewicz. The most important argument among romantics”), Wydawnictwo Poznańskie, Poznań 2011. The review of the book has been divided into two parts. The first part has the title: “Krasiński i Mickiewicz” (“Krasiński and Mickiewicz”) and the second: “Bohaterowie a ich twórcy” (“Heroes and their creators”). The first part presents the ideological conflict between Zygmunt Krasiński and Adam Mickiewicz approached by Fiećko as ‘the most important argument of the romantics’ (attention has been paid to, among others, conflicts over the nation, the issue of Jews and of Russia as well as discussions around the concepts of Messianism and Towiański's movement). The second part of the review discusses the problem in the chapter “Bóg – Historia – Zło” (“God – History – Evil”) and describes the heroes created by Adam Mickiewicz and Zygmunt Krasiński.

    Literatura z pogranicza, czyli o niezwykłości wczesnego romantyzmu

    Review: Monika Stankiewicz-Kopeć, „Pomiędzy klasycznością a romantycznością. Młodzi autorzy Wilna, Krzemieńca i Lwowa wobec przemian w literaturze lat 1817-1828” (“Between classicism and romansticism. Young authors of Vilnius, Krzemieniec and Lvov about changes in literature in years 1817-1828”), Księgarnia Akademicka, Kraków 2009, pp. 320. Monika Stankiewicz-Kopeć in her book discusses the problems of the romantic breakthrough approached from the perspective of the 'minorum gentium' creators. The review of the monograph contains the analysis of the theses included in the book as well as the way of proving them. In the first part main thoughts presented by the researcher have been described, such as emphasis on the multi-current nature of the romantic breakthrough, the analysis of shaping literary awareness in particular environments, a suggestion of periodization. Later contents of consecutive chapters have been presented in a detailed way and evaluated as well as the original approach to problems related to the romantic breakthrough in Poland has been emphasized.

    Tłumacz i tłumaczenie. Kilka nienaukowych uwag o osobie i sposobie pracy tłumacza literackiego

    The authors of this article translate 21 plays by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz into German in years 2006-2012. In the essay "Translator and translation. A few non-scientific remarks on the figure and work of a literary translator" their personal experiences and thoughts are described as well as adventures connected with the work of a translator of belle-lettres. The starting point being the personal situation of the translator, his/her goals and personality, through the problem of joined transaltion work, the authors on specific examples discuss the issue of translating aptronyms in Witkacy’s theatre. Moreover, the authors confront the reader with the problem of certain sequences of the original as being impossible to translate and at the same time they indicate the limits of translation. Having done this they do not reveal all the secrets of their joined work but they invite to read the plays translated by them, which have been published in four volumes in two languages.

    „Promethidion” Cypriana Norwida i „List do artystów” Jana Pawła II, czyli rozważania o pięknie prawdziwym

    Two voices of Polish thinkers and poets on true beauty – “Promethidion” by Cyprian Norwid and “Letter to artists” by John Paul II – are related to each other in the thought on the soteriological character of beauty which triumphantly leads the man beyond his poverty and the perspective of a fall. Both texts were written despite the dominating philosophical currents of their times. Norwid denied hedonism and fuctionalism, and John Paul II’s message from "Letter to artists" remains in principal intellectual opposition to the ‘culture of death’ and postmodern esthetical relativity. Norwid’s thought about beauty is also placed in opposition to promoted by the 20th-century avant-garde and taken over by postmodernism category of ‘originality’. The place of the significant for modernity subjectivism and esthetical relativism is taken over by ‘esthetical personalism’ in the works of the recluse from Paris.

    Topos dzieciństwa w świetle historii (ogólny zarys problemu w poezji nowoczesnej 1939-1989)

    The attention in this article is paid to the problem of childhood (its literary picture in poetry) in relation to external factors – events and history (including the socio-political context). The researched material consists of Polish poetry from years 1939-1989 (as a clearly distinguished segment of the historical-literary process). Methodological ordering of the contents of subject literature results from the use of two research paradigms: one – current-autobiographical one – shows the problem under discussion in reference to such topics of 20th century writings as exile (poetry of return by Łobodowski, Wierzyński etc.) immigration (currents: nostalgic [pansentimentalism] and emotionally neutral), Holocaust (motifs of fear, the division between now and then, the role of imagination); the second one allows to follow the topos of childhood viewed in the perspective of history according to the order of generations entering Polish literature (from generation 1920 to New Age Groups) and to succession of consecutive phases of literary development in the second half of the 20th century (e.g. socrealism and soc-plans). The text is concluded with the thought that poetic texts (concerning childhood in the light of history) are viewed as, among others, records of ‘rites of passage’ – from the child phase of pre-personalistic personality (the child’s sense of being one with the world, experiencing the harmony of being) to the period of personalization (when history leaves its stamp on this period; characterized by the sense of the subject’s distinctiveness from the reality, of individual separateness, the need for rationalization of one’s own and surrounding existence). The role of history often comes to leading a child from the pre-personalistic period to the experience of personalization.

    Syberia i Daleki Wschód w twórczości Igora Newerlego. Pisarska wizja, oceny, dyskusje

    Igor Newerly (1903-1987) originating from a Czech-Russian-Polish family was characterized by Polish national identity, which he expressed in his works on, among others, Far-eastern and Siberian topics. In Manchuria occupied by the Japanese the story in “Leśne morze” (“Forest sea”) is placed. Siberia is the scenery for the plot of “Wzgórze Błękitnego Snu” (“Hill of the Blue Dream”). The characters in both these novels are Polish people staying in a multinational and multireligious environment. The two historical novels by Igor Newerly are examples of reference to the output of both Polish and foreign literature. At the same time they are original works. The writer was inspired to a greater degree by his own life and ideological experience than by the output of other authors.

    Z "cierniem wbitym w serce". Michała Zielińskiego droga do sławy

    Michał Zieliński (1905-1972) from Jarosław inscribed in the history of his family city as a talented poet and musician, a song composer, out of whose compositions the earliest one to move to the top was the soldier song entitled "Serce w plecaku" ("Heart in the Backpack"). The popularity of short literary-musical forms of his own authorship he owed to the period of military service at the garrison in Jarosław, where his talents were recognized and also to the demand for musical culture propagated in regional healing-leisure centers of the Second Republic of Poland at those times. A resort of this kind, a well-known and popular in Poland then was Truskawiec (at present a town in Ukraine). The orchestra of the 3rd regiment of infantry legions was a substitute of a musical academy for Zieliński, under the guidance of a professional coming from Bydgoszcz, a drum major lieutenant Tadeusz Dawidowicz. During the concert season in Truskawiec in September 1933 the first public performance of the song “Serce w plecaku” took place. First publication of the song signed by the author (without the refrain) can be found in the collection entitled "Wiersze żołnierskie" ("Soldier poems") published by the Military Scientific-Educational Center in Warsaw in 1938. The enormous success of the song came with the events of the Second World War. This success was not in any way produced by the author and the composer but by many known and unknown performers. This song was sung everywhere. In the circumstances of conspiracy a few times it was anonymously published since 1943 in the form of the Gebethner and Wolff editions as well as the piratical editions. After the war the creator of the song as the member of ZAiKS (Polish Society of Authors and Composers) had to face the attacks from the usurpers in the fight for copyrights (the objects of this greed were, of course, royalties). The first publication, authorized by Zieliński after the war, of the lyrics took place in the anthology "Poets for soldiers 1410-1945" (Warsaw 1970), edited by Janusz Kapuścik and Wojciech J. Podgórski. The dam for the press discussion was finally laid by their article "Prawo do “Serca w plecaku”" ("The right to the “Heart in the Backpack”") (“Życie Warszawy” 1975, no. 107, p. I).

    "Kontynenty - Nowy Merkuriusz" (styczeń 1959 - luty 1961)

    The article is a discussion – mainly from the editorial-programme side – of the history of the fourth mutation of the magazine published in London by a poetic group called “Continents”. In this outline goals set by the changing editorial board are indicated and the difficulties faced while realizing particular plans are discussed. Apart from that changes in the thematic-content structure of the monthly issue have been presented as well as opinions and evaluations given by its readers and members of the editorial board have been cited.

    Samotność nad kartką papieru. Dąbrowska jako epistolografka

    The publication of Maria Dąbrowska "Diaries" allowed to look at the writer from a new, previously unknown perspective; her diary became one of the most important testimonies of contemporary times. A huge surprise for the historians of literature was vast correspondence of the writer numbering many thousands pieces in the following years. Among many of her sets of letters the most interesting ones are those exchanged with Marian Dąbrowski (ed. 2005), Jerzy Stempowski (ed. 2010) and his father Stanislaw (edition in preparation) as well as with a long-term life companion Anna Kowalska. The latter set numbering over 3100 letters, approved for publication due to the decision of heirs, will be published unabridged in years 2016-22; works on the first volume (1943-45) are significantly in progress. Among the sets designed for publication in the near future there is also the one with Kazimierz Wierzyński. This article discusses the most important sets of letters from and to Dąbrowska indicating their factual wealth and biographical specificity.

    Dialogi pisarzy młodopolskich z "Lillą Wenedą" Juliusza Słowackiego

    This article analyses connections between the romantic idea of spiritual development and modernist search for the truth of existence. The patron of activities directed in this way was Juliusz Słowacki, whose works and life inscribed in artistic-philosophical actions of modernist artists and the text which most fully expressed the analysed issues was the drama entitled “Lilla Weneda”. Modernist writers, for whom the problems of the strength of the character, the will, inner transformation or lack of it, initiated a dialogue with the tragedy by "Balladyna"’s author in their texts (W. Berent “Próchno”, M. Wolska “Swanta”, A. Lange “Wenedzi”, J.A. Kisielewski “Sonata”). This dialogue took place along several lines (fate, symbolism of a ritual, the figure of a priestess, mysterious objects, the figure of the Bride, the idea of wedding, the desire to be reborn). The present analysis has indicated strong semantic-symbolic connections between the text by Juliusz Słowacki and his modernist ‘interlocutors’.

    Recepcja utworów Walerego Łozińskiego

    This article discusses critical literary texts devoted to Walery Łoziński. The writer became famous mainly as the author of "Zaklęty dwór" ("Enchanted manor"). Reception of Łoziński’s works has been discussed in three parts: "Contemporary on Łoziński", "Opinions about Łoziński’s output 1911-33" and "Opinions about Łoziński’s output – new ones". In part one both articles written during the writer’s life and those written after his premature death have been referred to. Part two makes reference to texts by Karol Estreicher senior and Wilhelm Bruchnalski, which remind of Łoziński figure but the main focus has been on the articles and the book by Adam Bar entitled "Zapomniany powieściopisarz lwowski" ("Forgotten novelist from Lvov"). In the end of this part there have been references to smaller texts on Łoziński. In part three main attention has been paid to texts which appeared after 1945. Smaller articles have been briefly discussed. The most of the attention has been devoted to the researcher who studied Walery Łoziński’s output thoroughly and deeply, namely to Julian Krzyżanowski. In the end TV series based on "Enchanted manor" directed by Antoni Krauze has been discussed.

    Anna Libera „Krakowianka”. Narodowość i regionalizm

    Anna Libera (1805-1886) is one of the most unique figures of romantic Cracow. She conformed her life to two passions – literature and social activity. She wrote epic works and dramas but she was mainly recognized thanks to poetry inspired by Cracow history and local folklore. The most popular pieces in her output, the so-called ‘krakowiaki’, meaning songs stylized to be like folk songs, refer to romantic nationality and regionalism. In public Libera also realized herself as the first suffragist in Cracow. She put forward her postulates in numerous speeches, appeals and essays, in which she demanded improvement in the lives of women. The majority of Libera’s works have not yet been published and are still in the form of handwritten manuscripts in the Cracow Czartoryski Library.

    Refleksje Karola Olgierda Borchardta o zawodzie nauczyciela (listy pisarza do „Zosi”)

    Karol Olgierd Borchardt (1905-1986) was a captain of ocean going navigation, a writer and a teacher. He started his teaching job during World War II in England where taught in and directed Maritime Gymnasium and Grammar School in Landywood. In 1953-1978 he lectured (mainly astronavigation) at Gdynia Maritime University. He was a unique and even charismatic teacher. He did not punish his students, rarely gave bad marks, he always treated his pupils as subjects of the teaching process, in a way that could be described as ‘fatherly-facetious’ manner. This outline comprises unpublished Borchardt’s letters in which the writer expressed his thoughts on the most difficult, according to him, profession – the profession of a teacher.
