Anthony Trollope – Obcy za kulisami angielskości Celem dysertacji Anthony Trollope – Obcy za kulisami angielskości jest ukazanie postaci angielskiego pisarza doby wiktoriańskiej, Anthony’ego Trollope’a w kontekście obcości. Praca podzielona została na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy stanowi zalążek biografii ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kwestii Obcości i Inności. Postkolonialnej interpretacja twórczości Trollope’a tkwi u podstaw rozdziału drugiego, którego celem jest zanalizowanie obrazu Innego w prywatnej i służbowej korespondencji autora oraz dwóch zbiorach listów literackich – The Irish Famine: 6 Letters to the Examiner oraz The Tireless Traveler: 20 Letters to the Liverpool Mercury. Ostatni zbiór zanalizowany został przy użyciu teorii C. Hall o kartografii ludów Imperium Brytyjskiego. Trzeci rozdział pracy zawiera imagologiczną analizę trzech wybranych powieści Trollope’a – The Way We Live Now, Barchester Towers oraz The Prime Minister w oparciu o stworzony przez J.-M. Mourę model Alter–Alius. Poszerzono pole semantyczne imagologii poprzez stworzenie denotujących płeć kategorii imagologicznych Altera oraz Alia. W celu wykazania uniwersalności zastosowania tego modelu, został on najpierw użyty dla analizy kanonicznego dyskursu feministycznego, dotyczącego recepcji Jane Eyre Ch. Brontë. Następnie zbadane zostały wizerunki Obcych oraz Innych we wspomnianych już powieściach Trollope’a.

Anthony Trollope – the Other behind the veil of Englishness My dissertation is devoted to the issue of Otherness in the works of Anthony Trollope, the prolific Victorian author known for his defining of the concept Englishness and his support for colonialism. This is the image I try to analyse. My dissertation consists of three chapters. The first one features the author’s biography and a brief recuperation of criticism and reception. The second chapter is dedicated to the issue of the Other as presented in Trollope’s private and official correspondence as well as in two series of literary letters – Irish Famine. Six Letters to Examiner and The Tireless Traveler. 20. Letters to Liverpool Mercury. The chapter revokes the theories of Catherine Hall and significant terms – going a-Trolloping and cartography of the peoples. The third chapter introduces a new method of resolving the problem of Otherness in three of Trollope’s novels The Way We Live Now, The Prime Minister and Barchester Towers. The chapter features the model of four types of the Other – alia – alius - alter – altera, based on the concept created by Jean-Marc Moura and implemented in Polish literature studies by Małgorzata Świderska. In my dissertation I use comparative, hermeneutic and post-colonial approach. The concept of Imagology presented by Manfred Beller and Joseph Leerssen is also relevant to the topic.
